Fighting Sleep Vent

My daughter is horrible at sleeping. She will fight so hard even when she is being held. We've tried rocking, singing, bouncing her on my lap from her butt, her swing, a crib soother, ect. Trying as soon as she gets tired doesn't help because she will hold off until 30 mins before she eats next to fall asleep. After she eats she will fall asleep on the boob again until I move her so a lot of times i am stuck holding her the entire times she naps and nothing gets done. Tomorrow she turns 4 months so we are going to start cereal, but i need to pump to add milk to the cereal. I can't do that because I have to hold her what seems like 24/7. I tried pumping this morning and she kept waking up so i had to stop and barely got anything.

I guess at night she sleeps pretty well. She'll still wakes up at least 3 times per night, But at least she isn't up every 2 hours like she used to be and I don't have to hold her the entire night. I'm just really want her to be sleep trained but she doesn't self sooth herself.

Re: Fighting Sleep Vent

  • My LO doesn't self sooth either. He naps on my chest and won't fall asleep unless I'm patting his back. At night he falls asleep drinking a bottle. It's what works for us now although I know breaking these bad sleep habits will be difficult. Sometimes we do what we have to in order to survive!

  • My dd has no idea how to self soothe either..then I get frustrated at myself for getting frustrated with her bc it's not her fault. She sounds like your dd with napping...although a few weeks ago I ordered a Merlin magic sleep suit and now I am able to put her down for naps most of the time. She will only sleep for 45 min about every 1 1/2 hours, but I figure those are 45 min breaks I didn't have before. I guess I don't really have any advice for you but just wanted to let you know I feel your pain. I'm definitely planning on asking the dr next week how I can help her learn to self soothe.
  • I definitely get mad at myself for getting angry at her for not sleeping. I've actually cried a few times today because of it. At one point it was like she knew I needed cheered up. She stopped crying and smiled at me for a few seconds. I hope her extreme fighting lately has to do with another tooth coming in. She is 17 weeks and already has two.

Thank you ladies for letting me know I'm not alone. Any advice is helpful.
  • You are definitely not alone! My DD hates sleep it seems. She fights it so bad and will not self soothe. Has to nurse to go to bed at night and lots of walking bouncing and singing for naps. I worry she doesn't get enough sleep as she doesn't sleep great at night and will maybe take two 45 minute naps/day. As far as having to hold her I know it's frustrating when everyone says "they are only this little for such a short period of time and to hold them"! Love holding her but would be nice if getting her to sleep didn't take an hour before you can actually lay her down! Oh well I do love snuggling with her, chores can wait :)
  • I hate that I don't get a break. DH will take her when he gets home from work for a bit, but I'm still home not going anything but catching up on my phone. I don't want grandparents to take her until she is better at sleeping and doesn't scream.
  • I used to have the same napping problem. He would have to stay on me and have my nipple still in his mouth in order for him to stay asleep. I now use the swaddle me thing and either vokb him or give him a bottle. If he's on the boob swaddled he will fall asleep I wait about 10 mkn and move him to his bouncy chair as it feels like I'm still holding him on the rare occasion he opens his eyes I rock it quickly and his eyes flutter back closed. Sometimes big he's having a rough day I do gripe water about 20 min before his nap and it helps him relax.

Hope you find something that works! My issue is more thatvhes supposed to sleep through the night and has before a couple times and now nope. He also used to feed for maybe 5 min just to soothe himself back to sleep, not anymore he is in each for 15 min and sometimes does both twice :( its taking almost an hour to get him back to sleep at night but daytime baps have been alot better lol.
