Normal sleep pattern?

Just wondering if other moms are having the same issue...
My 7 week old baby has started to do some 3 hour stretches at night. However I notice that part of the time that she's sleeping she's tossing and turning and grunting all while keeping her eyes closed and not waking up and crying.
I know she's fed and diaper is changed. It's not her typical gas pain behavior either. So I just let her toss and turn a while since she's not opening her eyes or crying while doing this... She seems to be in sleep still. She will do this every 10-15 mins for an hour or two at the beginning of her 3 hour stretch or at the end when I assume it's time for her next feed.
Should I go ahead and pick her up and tend to her (often wakes her up then ) or let her settle on her own while she does this. I'm wondering if this is just part of her sleep? It seems restless but I don't know if this is normal for 7 week old baby. She's a very busy baby while sleeping so sometimes I can't even swaddle her when this happens because that wakes her up even more as she fights the swaddle and wants her arms out

Re: Normal sleep pattern?

  • I would let her go. She's learning to self soothe and sleep through her own movements. My 3 week old tends to whine at random times in his sleep. He's a noisy sleeper and her tosses his hands a lot. I figure as long as he's not crying I'm going to let him learn how to handle it

  • My baby does this. Her sleep can seem very unsettled. But I think it is normal. If she is not crying and her eyes are closed, we leave her alone. Even if she is grunting, moving her legs, etc. I figure if we pick her up when she is doing this, she won't learn to go back to sleep on her own. During the middle of the night, we only get her out of the bassinet if she cries.
  • My 4 week old does this... I've let her go and it's enabled her to sleep a 5 hour stretch for a few nights in a row! It keeps me up because I'm constantly checking if she's awake or just active sleeping...hopefully I'll learn the difference soon :)
  • My 8 week old does the exact same thing !!! I'm glad I'm not alone , but he will sometime scream while doing this with his eyes closed. I thought it was just bad gas pains , or growing pains . He is getting better since I switched his formul back to enfamil gentle ease but he still does this. I thought maybe it was night terrors but I'm not sure. This has been going on for about 2 weeks or so. I just feel so bad for him when he is screaming but like u said his eyes are closed and I let him work thru it unless he wakes up then I soothe him back to sleep. I have my 8 week check up next week so I plan on asking the dr, and I will let u guys know what they say.
  • Great to know - they seem to be close in age so I wonder what the doctor will say. Please do share ! I'm hoping it's a phase and maybe just a sign that our babies will soon start to be better sleepers!
  • That's what I am hoping for!!! He doesn't sleep well during the day, but I think it's because I let him fall asleep on me then transfer him to the pnp or crib. And it only lasts a little bit. But he has been sleeping longer at night, 3-4 hrs a night.
  • Yes, she initially wouldn't sleep more then 1-2 hours stretches but Now if you include those "fussy habits" with tossing and turning/grunting it's 3- 4 hours. So that's I'm hoping once she learns to settle in a little more this may be a sign she could sleeping longer stretches.
  • Yup that's what I am hoping!!!
