First Trimester NT Screening Question

I did a bump search and a Google search and didn't get the answer I was looking for and/or got a mixed result of answer.  So I thought I'd try here.   I'm a snowflake today!  Wahooo lol (yup I'm being snarky at myself lol)

So anyway I have my first trimester screening and NT scan tomorrow.  I know they do an ultrasound.  I've never made it this far in pregnancy before.  I'm currently 13 weeks 2days as of tomorrow. So for all you ladies that have already been through this my question is this:
Is the ultrasound at this point done transvaginally or regularly with that thing they rub over the belly?  Just wondering.  I'm hoping it is the latter b/c I hate those transvaginal things.  They have me scheduled for 30 minutes with the ultrasound part and I really hope that thing isn't going to be poking and prodding down there for that long.  Not to be too tmi or anything but the only thing I want poking/prodding me down there for that long is my husband! lol

Re: First Trimester NT Screening Question

  • We did ours at 12w3d and they did it abdominally. My ultrasound tech actually said that it is easier at that point to get a clearer picture of the baby and of what they are looking for.

I got mine done at 12w4d and it was abdominal. My boy was lazy and laid his head right on the walls of the placenta so the tech kept having to poke my belly to make him move for a good pic of the neck fold lol at one point, he got so annoyed that he rolled over and turned his back to us. :)
  • I had mine down abdominal my last week at 12w4d as well
  • I had mine last week at 12+2 - it was abdominal (thank goodness) and it did take a while, because baby was looking right at us, when we needed to see his neck, not his weird alien face.  The ultrasound tech had to poke and prod my stomach, but baby is chilllllll and it didn't bother him at all.  It look forever to get the measurement they needed.  Hope your spawn is more cooperative and it won't take as long.  :)

I had mine done at 13w2d and it was abdominally as well. It does take awhile b/c they're taking all the measurements, checking organs, etc. That was done by a technician then the Dr comes in and does a quick check and goes over all of the pictures and measurements and gave me my ratios.

ETA: I'm 15w4d now. I go on Thursday for an appt and will probably do the 2nd part of the bloodwork and I'll get my official results after that I believe. But so far bloodwork from 1st trimester and the NT scan looked good.
  • Both of my 1st tri screens have been abdominal.  We were in there for a good 15 minutes so got to see the baby a lot as they took all the measurements.  Same thing as above, doctor came in right after to go over it all and look a little more.  Enjoy seeing your baby on the screen!

  • As with other PPS, mine was done abdominal. Spent about 15 minutes looking at the baby and getting measurements. Then blood work. So far its been my favorite appointment as we got to spend alot of time with the US.

  • Just had mine done yesterday... They couldn't get one of the measurements done abdominally so I had to have it done transvaginally. I'll be glad when they no longer do those anymore. It was a long process yesterday and the tech had me nervous for awhile as she was not telling me what was going on. She did however give me feedback at the end that all of the measurements were good. So I won't be complaining.
  • I had mine done 2 weeks ago and it was also done over the belly.  I would say it took about 10 minutes to get all the measurements, then I did my blood work right there.  I agree with above poster, it was my favorite appointment to date - got to spend a lot of time looking at the little one!  Good luck! :-)

  • I had mine done at 11 weeks 2 days, also abdominally. Hate to burst your bubble, but you very well could be there for 30 minutes or longer, depending on how the baby cooperates. It took over an hour to do my triplets.
Really not a bad procedure at all :) you get to watch the baby on TV while they are measuring. Good luck!
  • Same here! Abdominally! Enjoy your appt and seeing your baby!
  • Mine was done at 12 weeks abdominally. Like others have said, I loved this appointment. I got the best ultra sound pics and got to see the baby moving around. The worst part was the blood work.
  • I had mine done on Monday. I had both abdominally and vaginally. And the baby still wouldn't cooperate and move it's head. Couldn't get a good reading on the neck fold.

  • Had mine done two weeks ago. It was done abdominally but Kermit was in the wrong position so the tech had to poke it pretty hard with the wand to move it around, and when that didn't work I was prompted to cough (repeatedly; this also didn't work) and roll over onto my side, then back again after a few minutes (this, in combination with more hard poking, finally did the trick and enabled the tech to get good measurements).

The poking was not the most comfortable experience in the world, but other than that it wasn't too bad. I agree with previous posters that getting to see the thing on the screen for a while was pretty cool (but also SUPER WEIRD, like wtf, I was not expecting to see that thing jumping around in there!).
  • Mine was at 10 weeks and done transvaginally, so maybe that's just how it's done that early on - but if it makes you feel any better, she told me she was only putting it in about an inch and a half deep, it really didn't feel as invasive as I thought it would.
  • I had mine done at 12 weeks. We saw the baby for over 30 min and even got to see the brain it was so cool! I didnt expect to recognize anything on the screen there just dark spots and blobs but the brain was so obvious it was cool. Doc did warn me they do a transvaginal at the 2nd nt scan to check ....the cervix? I think? but he said ill warn you now since some people come for the second and expect the abdominal again. Thank you for the heads up! Lol They gave us 8 different us pics to take home it was the best appointment yet!
