Nausea worse during blood work

Went for my first round of blood work yesterday.  The morning sickness has mostly been nausea and I haven't been vomiting.  We conceived by doing IVF so blood work was not unusual for me.  The phlebotomist i had yesterday tried sticking me in the left arm and couldn't get the vein, and then tried my right hand.  She kept fishing around for the vein so much that all of a sudden the room started spinning and getting fuzzy.  I let her know this and she stopped and got me some water, but before I knew it, she was yelling for the doctor who grabbed a waste basket for me to vomit in.

I was so embarrassed because after that, we decided I would have to go back for BW (dec 9) and that this was common for pregnant ladies to experience.  Does anyone have any suggestions on preventing this?  I imagine had the phlebotomist gotten a good poke on me, it wouldn't have been so bad, but after seeing my yogurt and banana an hour after eating it, I'm hoping to avoid it in the future.

What do you ladies eat before having blood work done, and what do you try and do to prevent getting sick?

Re: Nausea worse during blood work

  • I've never had issues with blood draws in the past but since getting pregnant they do not agree with me AT ALL.

Bring a juice box and a granola bar or trail mix with you. Also I've just learned that even 1 vial will effect me so I bring my husband now so I don't have to drive shortly after feeling sick/faint. I straight up puked and fainted when they did the 12 week draws (about 15 vials) but the others I tend to just feel faint nd nauseous.

I was also really embarrassed because there were like 4 other people in the room getting their blood drawn and I felt bad for them. The nurses are totally used to it and they actually commented that since I was making jokes that it helped the other people keep calm about it too.

  • I've never vomited, but bloodwork usually makes me faint (or come VERY close). since getting pregnant i seem to have overcome my fainting problem.
still though, i make sure i eat something - anything really - & drink a glass of OJ before going in for blood work. seems to be doing the trick. i also look away while they are taking the blood, & tell them i sometimes become very faint so they always have me lie down. i like to chat up the tech as well to keep me distracted, & before you know it, it's over!
  • I always get sick or pass out!! Last pregnancy I had an awesome nurse. I told her my situation, if I saw the needle or looked at anything blood related she'd be picking me up off the floor. She used an empty room every time I had to have BW. I would lay on the table and she would do her thing and leave a trash can within reach. It was wonderful. She would make me lay there until she felt I was ok to leave after too. I never can make it any better, but at least she understood and worked with me.

PS-the only time it was no problem was when I was in labor and was begging for my drugs!! :-). Good luck!!
