Rushed ultrasound - possibly wrong?

Hi!

So I had my 20 week anatomy scan, and the ultrasound tech was booked and in a huge hurry. She took me in at 10:06, and said she had a 10:15. When she got to the 'money shot', there were two lines that she assumed were labia, so she said looks like a girl - although the babies legs were together and feet were towards the head. With my daughter, the tech actually showed us the three lines - this time it was more like two lines, let's assume it's labia. Unfortunately I don't have any photos to show. So should I be confident buying pink stuff or have more of a wait and be surprised approach?

  • Im sorry you feel like the tech was in a hurry. I had my a/s today and it took less time than I had expected, but the tech went over everything she was looking at with us. I certainly dont mean to be rude, but looking for the sex is likely the least of the tech's concerns as the point of the scan is to make sure baby is developing correctly.

We're team green so I don't really have anything to say about looking for baby's sex. It probably would have been best to ask for the picture before leaving but you could call and see if they are still able to print you a picture. If they can't and you really want one then it might be better to just go to an elective ultrasound place because going back to your ob's office for another ultrasound that isnt medically necessary may not be covered by your insurance.

Also, maybe the tech felt that the baby wasnt really being cooperative enough to get a good picture to verify the sex.
  • I am not sure what the protocol is, but our ultrasound technician showed us the three lines even though we already had the gender confirmed as a result of the maternity21 test.  I am not sure if you can request images, but you could mention it your OBGYN next time you see him/her and raise your concern (maybe they will send you for another one???)
  • I promise the sex of your baby is the least of the techs concerns. I not being insensitive, but wouldn't you rather confirm that everything else looks good and baby is growing at a healthy rate instead of what your baby's gender is??

At this point I think it's better if you get an elective. They are typically cheaper and because you are in charge you can have them look at the genitals the entire time if you want.

  • ^wss. Anatomy scan is to check for the health of the baby. Finding out the sex is only a bonus that you sometimes get.
  • I will never understand the desire for a photo of baby's "potty shot." I'm not going to put a picture of my child's genetalia in a keepsake frame, and I am not going to be showing it off to people. That said, my doc's office gave me a printout both times.

If you feel your sex determination was rushed or want more pics, get an elective ultrasound, otherwise, wait til birth when you can be reminded that LO is a girl (or boy) with every diaper change.

  • Good call, I think more than anything I was upset that she was telling me we had to hurry up because she booked two patients 15 minutes apart. I may do elective simply to have a nicer experience, and then will be thrilled either way!
  • Ready4theParty, I agree - it's just that last pregnancy we were told the wrong one, so maybe if I ever get pregnant again I will be team green for sure! the baby is healthy, so we are thrilled either way - I just wish I didn't have any indicator because I remember how it is to bond with the idea of one and then it's another
  • Also, I guess my real question to you guys is just, how safe should I feel buying pink stuff, lol. I don't really care about owning that photo - I just wanted to know if you guys at this point would feel pretty confident in her assessment, or have more of a wait to be surprised attitude.
  • If you are that concerned about her answer get a elective. She is a trained professional so I might only challenge her (get the elective) if she spent all of two seconds on the gender shot. I haven't had my a/s yet. But with Dd it was a pretty quick deal. If DH hadn't been surprised it was a girl I don't think the three lines would have been explained to us.

  • It really was a two second thing. I'll just buy neutral stuff for now to be safe. We have a special name tradition in our family that we like to do on delivery day, but oh well, I'll be prepared for either and won't get anything engraved until after delivery! :)
  • If my NT scan was that rushed, I would definitely ask for another one. My scan took nearly an hour, and she took 18 different measurements (brain, heart, stomach, limbs, etc)... I can't imagine a u/s tech taking just 9 minutes and getting all measurements they need.

  • Yeah - I guess asking the doctor politely won't hurt - if he says no, he says no, but no harm in asking!
  • Having had my 20 week US today, I can tell you that by this gestational age, when it is a boy there is no mistake!!! If she got to the money shot and did not see anything 'protruding' (LOL), it must really be a girl. Techs are super savvy with this and they don't need a lot of time to make this determination by this gestational age. In my ultrasound today it took a <5s pic to determine it's a boy...
  • While it seems like bad practice to stack appointments like that, my anatomy only took about 10 minutes. The baby was in a really good position and relatively calm, so she was able to get all the shots and measurements she needed.
  • Mine took about 50 minutes, but our active little boy wasn't giving the tech an easy time at all. lol. If he would have held still it would probably have taken half the time.

My tech said it can take anywhere between 10 and 45 minutes. I also had to do a fetal echo at the same appt and that took a lot longer because I had to dance around a bit trying to get the baby to move.
  • Like others have mentioned, they're more concerned with measurements and making sure everything looks good with the baby. Sounds like it was rushed and kind of a guess. I'd suggest going to an elective place where they can tell you the sex. We went to an elective place and it was clear it was a girl. We saw 3 lines clearly.
  • For both of my pregnancies both of my anatomy scans took about 45 minutes and both times the baby was cooperating. And that was with the tech going super quickly. Considering how important this scan is, I would be extremely pissed if someone rushed me through it. Also penises and vaginas are part of human anatomy too so I would expect them to give those areas the same amount of attention as they do any other area they are measuring. Yesterday my a/s scan revealed a possible issue with the kidneys so I have to go back for a detailed scan of the kidneys/penis to make sure those structures are functioning properly. Penises and vaginas are important too! They have other functions besides determining sex.
  • Mine took close to an hour with both pregnancies. I'd be disappointed if they had rushed me in and out in 15 minutes because getting everything measured properly is more important than them worrying about having booked too many appointments.

I'm not sure I'd buy pink based off what you were told.
  • I've had too many u/s at this point to count due to being high risk but two that confirmed girl and neither of the techs said anything about lines. Just that there is nothing between the legs. Also, my NT scan only took about 10 minutes, if that. She took lots of measurements too. Same with the a/s. Not very long. Everything was measured and info was provided to me as we went along.

  • You could always ask for another one or pay for an elective ultrasound just to be sure!
