Drying out breast milk

This has been a very emotional decision for me and a struggle but after 1 month, I have decided to stop breastfeeding. I had done a lot of research online an I called my doctor. My doctor told me to quit cold turkey (that suprised me) and to wear very tight bras and to wear frozen cabbage leaves in my bra. Is this crazy? Has anyone else ever tried to dry up their breast milk? How did it go for you?

  • I also stopped breastfeeding after a month due to having raynauds phenomenon and my baby having a shallow latch and tounge tie. The pain was so intense that I could no longer hold my baby to my chest. It was one of the hardest decisions I've ever made and very emotional. I did cabbage leaves in a tight sports bra and took peppermint essential oil for about 3 or 4 days. I am now almost 2 weeks out and feel much better. I still get beads of milk on my nipples and can hand express several drops, but no engorement.

Thank you! That makes me feel much better. How long did it take for you engorgment to go down?
  • I just talked to my LC yesterday who told me to make sure to avoid sage this thanksgiving because it dries up your breastmilk. She said they tell women who want to dry it up to eat sage.
  • @MamaBear345 I had gone to exclusively pumping to try and alleviate some of the pain and got to where I wasn't getting much milk. I then got what appeared to be the start of mastitis and spent an hour trying to massage out the areas that were clogged. The next day I started the cabbage leaves and felt better within a few days. I think despite my best efforts, my milk supply had decreased so I didn't get engorged. do you have a pump? Pumping a few times a day after you stop putounge baby on the breast my help. You could slowly decrease the number of times you pump a day so you won't get too engorged.
  • I'm also taking sudafed and drinking peppermint tea/eating peppermint Altoids. How often do you change the cabbage in your bra?
  • I changed them every few hours when they became wilted. They feel really good when cold.
  • Everytime I change, breast milk is just pouring out drip after drip. I have to change because there are huge wet spots on my shirt. I hope that is what's supposed to happen? It makes me sad too to see all that breast milk drip out because stopping was such a hard decision.
