Pumping question

I pumped for the first time today. I got 1 1/2 oz (LO is 2 weeks old) is this how much he's eating at every feed? I'm gonna start pumping / bottle feeding so my hubby can help out with feedings and want to know how much he needs for each feeding . Does 1 1/2 oz seem like a little bit? Thanks!

Re: Pumping question

  • Pumping is not a good indicator of how much your baby is getting. I can pump until nothing comes out but then I can hand express after that and get a good bit more. You know your baby is getting enough by how many wet diapers you get in a day. I think it's 7 or more diapers a day. Pumping in the morning will get the best results. I could only get 1/2 ounce to an ounce when I first started pumping. Now I get 1 to 2 ounces. It's slowly going up as baby gets more efficient at feeding.

  • When you are feed in the baby from a bottle you should try bottle pacing to get hunger cues from the baby and they will stop eating when they are done. I exclusively pump and at that age my baby was eating around 1.5-2 ounces at a time. We are 4 weeks now and she will eat 3-3.5 now. Still every 2.5-3 hours but a couple of longer stretches at night!!
  • My DD is 5 weeks and eats 2 ounces every 2-3 hours. I have pumped and bottle fed since the beginning since she was in the NICU.
  • I get 1-2oz on each side when pumping so 3-4 together each pumping. Not really sure what it suppose to be. But I was told to pump and than feed lo. It's been going good so far!
  • My DS is 3 weeks and eats anywhere from 2 oz to 4 oz... Doctor said that it is normal to only get a couple oz while pumping and that my 3 oz pumped is completely normal. You also need to remember that a baby is a much better pump than an actual pump!
  • Oh and I also started off with less than 1 at each pumping
