Last night I went into labor and went to the hospital. Based on the strength and timing of my contractions they thought I'd be at least 4cm but I'm only 1. I'm so bummed. Any tips to get this cervix open??? I want to see my baby girl.
Sex. Walking. Spicy foods. All things I have heard helped.
Not anymore.
Oh Really?? i did not know it changed!! My son was born at 38 weeks and they considered him full term. But that was almost 4 years ago!! Things change to often!

Yeah. It's 39-40 weeks now. It is why I do NOT want my doctor inducing me at 37+5 for his convenience.(I'm having Christmas baby)... But hang in there! When your LO is ready, they will get here soon enough! I know you're anxious. But your LO will be here before you know it!

Yep. 39 weeks is full term now.
They sent me home. But my provider considers me full term at 38 weeks.
I've said this before, but in other countries besides the US, 38 weeks is still considered full term. Just reminding you all that this is not an American forum.

No one needs a reminder but thank you. I live in the US so I stated what providers here in the US consider full term. Feel free to state what full term is where you live without being passive aggressive.

Interesting since the definition of full term changed a while ago:
The reason they changed "full term" from 37 to 39 weeks is to discourage non-medically necessary elective deliveries (as the link provided indicates). If you go into labor NATURALLY at 37 weeks or later, your baby will not be considered premature. The 39 week guideline was put into place to discourage doctors from performing elective c-sections and inductions prior to 39 weeks, with the idea that if someone has NOT yet gone into labor naturally, it's better for the baby to say in longer. The new guidelines were not meant to suggest that there is any danger in someone naturally delivering at 38 weeks. Despite "term" being defined as 39 weeks, there are literally no OBs -- in the US or elsewhere -- that would call a baby born after 38 weeks premature. For some reason, this is a concept that posters on here really struggle with.
So to the OP, you will be fine if your baby arrives during week 38. If your doctor isn't trying to stall dilation, you shouldn't be either. If I were you, I would try walking a lot and eating spicy foods. Squatting and using a birth ball can also help dilate the cervix. Best of luck to you!!!

I can't speak for others on here but I'm certainly not struggling with this. No one is saying her baby would be premature. That word wasn't even mentioned.
The OP's initial post was a tad misleading and I think that is what confused people. Was she still in the hospital? If so, why wasn't she asked the doctors and nurses what to do? Was she sent home because it was false labor? If so, she should not be trying to make her baby come at 38 weeks IF she can help it. Of course if labor is starting naturally then OP really has no choice in the matter but people were pointing out that the definition of full term has changed and every single week the baby can stay in up until 40 weeks is very important for development. In fact, the last few weeks are extremely critical for brain development. If labor truly did stop for OP then don't try to make something happen.
I think some people were unaware of the change in full term definition but you can't really debate the facts on this one.
As far as telling OP that she will be fine if the baby comes at 38 weeks, well, you don't know that. No one knows that so you probably shouldn't even say that.

Wasn't being passive aggressive. Actually was just trying to be helpful.

Thank you! Much more encouraging than some people. I appreciate it. This is my first pregnancy and I'm just anxious.
