RH- blood type

I recently found out that i am RH- bloodtype. Doctor says i may not be able to have a normal pregnancy again after this. There is a shot that can help. Has anyone ever experienced this and if so, did the shot help? And were you able to have children again?

Hi! I am currently 15 weeks pregnant, and my doctor said that I will have normal pregnancies. The only thing you have to do is call your doctor if you start spotting, because they will give you a Rogam shot within 48 hours of when the spotting starts, and if you don't spot at all, your first shot of Rogam will be at 27/28 weeks, and then one after you deliver. Basically if we don't get the shot, and our blood mixes with babies blood, our bodies could develop antibodies and essentially "attack" the baby and make it difficult to have a normal pregnancy again.. This is only if you don't get the shot. If you get the shot (which is highly recommended) you and baby will be safe & continue with a healthy pregnancy. I started spotting at 6 weeks and since it was over the weekend, I went to the ER and they gave me a shot of Rogam. I will now be all set with the shots until I deliver, and my body will not develop antibodies if my blood mixes with baby's blood. I'm pretty sure I got all of that right. At least that's what I learned when I was asking my doctor about it. Best of luck

PP is correct. Either your doctor was irresponsible in explaining this, or you misunderstood. You are most definitely able to have a "normal pregnancy" after this pregnancy. Lots of people have negative blood types, myself included. All you have to do is get the shot at week 28, and then they will test for your baby's blood type when he or she is born. It's really not a big deal.

Rh incompatibility USED to be a problem before rhogam was invented. Because of this, developing Rh disease is now very rare in the U.S. I wouldn't worry about it at all. I'm also Rh- myself.

That's silly that he made you that scared. I am also RH- and I just had to have a shot. DD ended up having the same blood type as me so I didn't have to get the second shot. For me my doctor just said I'm RH- and you need to have a shot possibly 2. I'm just wondering why he decided to alarm you. BTW I'm pg with my second and everything is fine.

Yes as PP mentioned it only matters if the father is positive. If you're both negative, the baby will be too and it's not an issue.

If dad is positive then baby probably is too but they won't know til it's born. To be safe they will give you the shot at 28 weeks-ish and again around 40 if baby's still in there because the shot lasts about 12 weeks. They'll give a first one sooner if you spot but you have to tell them right away and get the shot within a couple days.

Not dangerous for this baby, but if your blood mixed with the baby's positive type, your body could build up a defense against future positive babies. I think a negative baby would be fine.

That's how it was explained to me anyways, when I THOUGHT I was type A-. Turns out I didn't know my own blood type because my test said A+ and now I'm off the hook haha.

I'm Rh- (like all the women in my moms family). DH is also Rh- but here doctors tend to give the shot even if both are negative.

I am RH- and pregnant with my 2nd. I have never heard of anybody saying you can't have a normal pregnancy or not having any more children. Both my pregnancies have been completely normal with no complications and I have gotten pregnant easily both times. It's called a Rhogam shot that you get in your hip. It's very common. Lots of women are RH-.

I am RH-, too. My doc said the same things pp have said, as long as we get the shot, we will go on to have successful pregnancies. My mom was RH- and had 5 healthy pregnancies.

Labor usually ends with lots of mixing of blood which generates anti-RH antibodies in your blood. In future pregnancies, that presence can a rapid response if fetal blood mixes with yours for any reason, and it does happen from time to time. Rhogam essentially stops the body from reacting to RH and mounting an antibody response. Your next pregnancy will require rhogam from earlier on but that's that only "abnormal" aspect I believe.

Im rh- ....i had 2 miscarriages (one at 8weeks another at 20weeks) cause of it prior to this pregnancy. I'd start spotting and the doctor's would say it was from sex or something but no I needed my shot sooner then when your supposed to get it. Make sure you find a good doctor! Everybody's bodys are different I have a doctor now who draws my blood every 2 weeks checking on my rh to know when i need the shot. You can have babies after being neg. But make sure you have a good doctor!

Any spotting/bleeding at all when you're rh- means you should get your shot, because you just cannot be sure of the origin! I'm sorry you had such bad experiences with a crappy doctor

You can have a normal pregnancy now, and even after this one! Thank goodness for the shots for those that are Rh-! I'm A+, so I don't have to worry about the shot. But don't worry. Everything will be ok.
