Infertility

Hi... Intro (first time here)

Hi Ladies,

I am new to the bump. Ive been reading through some of the posts, waiting to be promoted to member so i can get some advice. A little about me. I am 35 and trying for over a year and a half. My OBGYN recommended I see a specialist after my FHS results came back at a 9.4 About a month ago I started going to IVFMD and have been getting a lot of test done, all routine. AMH, HSG, SHG, etc.. My AMH came back at a low 0.10 and the doctor said that i might not be a candidate for IVF and that i can try IUI but chances are very low so I should start considering an egg donor. After a roller coaster of emotions I have come to terms that this might end up being the path i have to take. Have any of you had results from IUI with such a low AMH (0.10)??
Also, please tell me how your DH's took this news? Unfortunately, DH has not taken it well to the point where I now doubt if this is something we can get through as a couple. He doesn't seem to be open to it. Any advice please please let me know.

Thank you

@apr1212 I'm 34 and was Diagnosed with Diminished Ovarian Reserve/Low AMH as AMH level was 0.39.  Because my number was so low my doctor said that IUI wasn't the best option for me, I needed to go straight to IVF to get as many eggs as possible before the AMH Levels dropped more. One thing that was on my side was the fact that when she did my antral follicle count I had 5 eggs resting on one ovary and 4 resting on the other so that was a good sign to her that she would be able to retrieve at least 4-5 eggs to give me a good chance at freezing a few eggs to try for pregnancy. She basically told me that my chances getting pregnant on my own naturally was probably about 1% because with low AMH a lot of times the eggs don't mature enough to sustain a pregnancy and with IUI she said my chances were like 5% so we jumped straight into IVF.

I'm sorry your DH is having such a hard time with the news, some take it very hard because they also see their hopes going out the window along with a lot of money possibly. I think the hardest decisions we had to make were 1) Can we get through this as a couple? and 2) If this doesn't work are we ok with not being parents and moving on with our lives TOGETHER? I've always made it very clear to my DH that he was and will always be my first choice so I wouldn't do this process if he wasn't in agreement with it. It is so different for everybody and this process is so stressful that if you all aren't solid and on the same page before going into it, it could possibly rip your relationship to shreds. I would really talk as much as possible and discuss your limitations because it seems that his are much different than yours. We had to discuss donor eggs in the event we didn't get any eggs and that was a limitation for both of us because we didn't want a child that was only him and someone else. So if we didn't get any eggs frozen we would try up to 3 cycles to produce eggs and after that we would come to terms with the fact that we wouldn't have children.

It really sucks to be in this position and I'm so sorry you have to be among those diagnosed with Infertility. The one thing I would suggest is, if you have the option, look for a doctor that specializes working with people with low AMH. Fortunately for me my doctor does and she was able to get my medication protocol right after only one failed cycle.

    Good luck!!

  • ShayLatrice This really helps me. The comfort of someone I can talk to about this. The problem with my DH is that he doesn't see the point of IUI and He refuses a donor. So our relationship is being tested. Ideally i do not want a donor but I would do it for him, to at least have a part of himself in a child. I am at a loss for how everything is unraveling. Its not easy.
  • I can imagine. This diagnosis was painful for me to come to terms with. Do you remember if they told you your antral follicle count? Because that number helps to really determine if they truly believe they wouldnt be able to stimulate you enough to get at any eggs. And honestly they wont know until they try and stimulate your ovaries.

  • Welcome @apr1212. I have been reading through the "third-party reproduction" board and they have a lot of threds on DE. You may find some helpful information their as well.
  • Hi and welcome. I am sorry you are finding yourself with these results.  I was diagnosed with DOR back in May.  My AMH was tested twice within 3 months by two different doctors and came back at 0.36 and 0.1.  My FSH was as high as 14.2.  My dr told us we have a 2% chance of getting pregnant naturally about 5-8% with IUI and if we can successfully respond to meds and get to an egg retreival about 35% chance with IVF.  We are currently in the 2WW of our 3rd IUI cycle.  I would have liked to go straight to IVF but my husband wasn't comfortable with that. Our plan right now is to continue with IUI until January (or one IUI cycle in the new year) and if nothing then IVF.  My dr did say if we do IVF and get the embryos PGS tested he thinks our chances are even higher with a normal embryo.  The dr's did mention that if we use donor eggs they can guarantee we will get a baby but we aren't ready for that yet.

So my amh was tested in March and May but I was pregnant in January but it did end in miscarriage so I did get pregnant with a low amh. I also have a 3 year old son who we conceived easily so I have no idea what my amh levels were then but I imagine lower than the average woman my age.

There is a great group on baby center for women with low AMH if you want to check it out and a lot of success stories every which way with all sorts of bad numbers that might give you some hope.  As long as you have some follicles on day 3 of your cycle I would go through some treatments (IUI or IVF with your own eggs to give it a shot first but if you are comfortable with donor eggs that is a great option too.

    Good luck
  • Hi

Sparrow004 thank you i had no idea there was a group for that. it didn't occur to me i was in that "third party reproduction" category. I spent all last night reading through it. and i learned a lot!

ShayLatrice I have no idea what my antral follicle count is, but i will be sure to ask in Thursdays RE visit. Thank you for bringing that up. i didn't know it was a thing.

rachlee2010 thank you so much for sharing your experience with me. I am not sure where to find baby center for women with low AMH is, is it a board on here or i need to google? i'll do both. I am not ok with a DE but if its my only option after failed IUI i will give it a try. I need to understand why i am not a candidate for IVF, I would like to go that route if IUI doesn't work. I will bring this up to my RE Thursday.

Thank you ladies. I appreciate this so much!
