10week old eating...

So my son is 10weeka old & I'm supplementing. but I try to breast feed more as much as possible before resorting to giving him formula. lately he's been nursing from both breasts & they feel saggy/empty(at least almost cause can't never be completely empty huh?) after he's done then not even 5mins later he's yelling & whining at me cause he's still hungry so after that he'll drink about 10oz of formula then hell be satisfied & go to sleep after his burping was just wondering if anybody else little one eats like this? & Also he sleep SO MUCH it worries me like hell sleep most the day & night the longest he ever stays up is maybe 1 hr & half

How tall and how much does your LO weigh? Mine is 23.7 inches and 15.5 lbs. At 10 weeks my little guys eats 6 oz bottles and has since 5 weeks old. Lately he's just wanted to sleep all day too. It's just about 7 pm and he hasn't been awake for more then an hour today. He's started to barely drink he's bottles the past few days too. I think there's a growth spirt during 10 weeks so I'm thinking that's what's going on. Your LO is one hungry baby!

  • 10 oz seems like so much to me. My (now exclusively) FF baby only eats 4 oz each feeding and he's 10 weeks as well.
  • My LO is in the 60-70 percentile for everything and is exclusively formula fed now at 10 weeks....I JUST bumped him up to 5oz every 2-3 hours! 10oz seems like a ton!?! LOL my LO takes great naps.
  • I would suggest seeing a lactstion consultant to do a weighted feed to see how much your son is getting while nursing. DS is 8 weeks and gets only 2 ounces or so when I nurse. So we supplement 2-3 ounces of formula with each feeding. 10 ounces seems like quite a bit!
  • 10 oz! How many times does he eat a day?

  • Probably sleepy from that incredibly full belly? Medically I have no idea but that's probably way too much. With a bottle it's harder for them to figure out they are full are you pacing it? How much In a day? How often does he feed?

  • My 11-week-old drinks exclusively breastmilk and eats 4 oz. every 2-3 hours during the day (when he drinks pumped milk). He's a big dude too, in the 98th percentile for height and 86th percentile for weight.

10 oz. seems like quite a bit unless he's only eating every 4+ hours. Have you tried giving him less in the bottle to see if less will satisfy him first? Are you using a slow-flow nipple so it takes him longer to drink so he can recognize when he's full?
  • Have you tried paced bottle feeding? 10 ounces is a lot at 10 weeks? Praying you get some good advice from these ladies!
  • OP was 10 oz a typo??
  • Babies should be getting 1-1.5 oz of formula or breastmilk per hour. 10 oz for one feed is way too much. Was this a typo?

I second PPs suggestion to have a weighted feeding with an IBCLC.

I was having trouble breastfeeding and was supplementing with pumped breastmilk. As it turns out, I was over feeding my babe. Now that we have reduced the supplements, she is more content after feeding at the breast, spits up less, and has fallen into a more predictable eating and sleeping pattern.

  • thanks ladies! & yes really 10oz  he does sleep a lot tho so when he wakes he wakes up super hungry he does it once in a while hell drink that much he won't spit up& how hr does it is he'll drink about a 4-5oz bottle & 10-15mins layer he'll be fussing & hungry again & hell drink another bottle & maybe 2oz after that one. then he knocks out & sleeps a long time I try to breast feed him before I even attempt to give him a bottle  he got his shots today & he's not under weight nor over weight he's just fine in the middle & he's tall the pediatrician said but other than that he's just fine. thankyou tho ladies! good advice & no I don't pace his feedings I just usually give him what he wants. & yes they are medium flow nipples only because were ordering his slow flow nipples that haven't gotten sent yet(hard to find the nipples in store :disappointed:
  • I agree that at this age babies are probably taking in 4-6oz and 10 seems like a lot.

I think a lot of what you should do depends on your long term breastfeeding goals. If you want to eventually EBF, I'd see a lactation specialist. Taking 10oz after a feeding basically means he got nothing from you but if you feel less full than we know that's not the case. You also need a slow flow nipple and I'd research paced feedings. You could also offer a few ounces and then a pacifier. Sometimes babies just want to suck.

But if you're fine supplementing, than keep doing what you're doing. If his weight is fine, he's not spitting up and your doctor isn't concerned, than I guess it's ok.
  • My 9 week old will drink 8 oz at his morning feed but that's only when he sleeps for 8-9 hours. Most the time during the day he will eat 5 oz every 3-4 hours. He's definitely not satisfied with less. I was told by my doctor to feed if he seems hungry and to not follow the "standard." Every baby is different.
I should add he is 12 pounds and 23 inches long.
