Pumping and driving - advice

So I'm going off the pumping in public post. I am amazed at how many of you pump and drive and I have some questions. First of all I would love to do this but don't know where to start. When I go back to work in the COLD January I will have an hour commute so I would like to pump on my way home - will be funny for all the truckers driving next to me on the freeway but so be it! I'm curious are you ladies driving the car or a passenger because that makes a difference. I'm nervous to have the flanges and bottles jam into my chest if I hit the stealing wheel in an accident. Is there anything else to use? And how do you use your pump - with a cigarette lighter adapter? And how long do you pump for? And what are you wearing - a cover up? I will be picking up my daughter from daycare so I guess I would unhook in their parking lot. And how long is your drive for - do you stop the pump while you're driving? Or are you undoing it all once home. Any helpful tips would be greatly appreciated. I'm so intrigued and really want to do this but don't know where/how to start.

Re: Pumping and driving - advice

  • I have a cigarette lighter adaptor. I use a hands free bra to hold the flanges in place. My drive is 30-45 minutes and I pump the whole time, but it takes that long for me to empty. I wear scrubs so I just pull my scrub top down over the pump parts and nobody can see anything.

  • I use the adaptor to plug into the car,
Hands free bra and my nursing cover as a cover. I usually pump the whole time (20-40 minutes). It's longer than I usually pump but since I have the time, why not?!

I usually hook everything up in the parking lot and then unhook when I get to work. If it's crowded, I usually move my car into the back so there's a little more privacy. Sometimes if traffic is at a standstill or I'm stuck at a long red light, I'll start disconnecting when I get close to home/ daycare.
  • I haven't pumped in the car but i have a freemie pump which is hands free and very discreet. You just slip it in your bra and the tubes come out the bottom of your shirt. People driving by wouldn't be able to see that you are pumping and the cup like shape would be safer in an accident.
  • I've done it several times. Hands free bra, throw scarf over my neck. Use cigarette lighter adaptor. Plug in/hook up before I start car. Pump 20 min. Unhook when I get to my stop. **if you need to go longer, pull out flanges but leave on hands free bra. Pull down shirt, grab your babe, buckle up babe, throw flanges back on and go!
  • You can buy just the freemie cups they are discreet then use medela stuff. Also I've read it's better to get an inverter in the car instead of using lighter adapter. I'm lucky I have an actual plug in my car no other device needed. I've got a 30 mins drive from day care to work so that's when I'll use them
  • @yiggle09 what's an inverter? And where do I find it?
