How many ounces?

My LO is 6 weeks old, and I'm started to think I'm not producing enough breastmilk for her to feed on. How many ounces are other breastfed babies eating out there? Another question, how long does your LO spend on the breast? I'm so frustrated!

Re: How many ounces?

  • My 5 week old eats about 2.5-3 oz from a bottle but I almost never manage to pump that much at a time between the two. But I've heard several places that baby is much more efficient than the pump (I don't have a hospital grade pump but I do have a little piggy)

I only feed off one side per feeding. She always pulls herself off and then seems content for 2.5-3 hours during the day and longer at night. She ranges from 15-40 minutes a feeding but usually about 25-30. Her 1 month appointment isn't until Wednesday but from weighing her at home I think she's up almost 2 pounds! She did just have a little growth spurt this last week and was screaming every hour during the day but she seems over it.

How are your diapers and weight gain?

  • She has wet diapers, but her weight gain is low. She's only gained 1 pound after her 5 day appt. She's in the 20th percentile.
  • Have you talked to a lactation consultant? My LO just turned 3 weeks today and she just got over her birth weight (after losing almost a whole pound when we left the hospital). So she only gained a pound in 3 weeks. But the lactation consultants say everything is looking good. And she's content between feedings. Just go with your gut instincts. If your LO is content after a feeding and you're seeing lots of diapers, I would say you're doing a good job.

This is us to the letter.
If you're looking to increase supply hand compress during feedings, as well as hand expression before and/or after will slowly help to increase your milk production. Do not block feed (where you only feed from one side per feed) unless baby tells you no more. This reduces supply over time (it is what lactation specialists recommend for moms with oversupply, something I know too well... in 10 minutes of pumping we were getting almost 20oz of milk).
