? for Breastfeeding moms about formula supplements

Hi ladies.  We had Caitlin's 4 month check-up earlier this week and her weight gain dropped off a little.  I talked to our ped about my fear that my milk supply is starting to drop off.  He suggested pumping for a few days to see how much I am producing at each feeding - so I have started doing that.  He also suggested giving Caitlin a formula supplement once or twice a day to help her put on some weight.  We tried giving her Similac Advance two times now and both times she makes a face like she is smelling something really bad (which is actually pretty funny) and then she won't drink from the bottle.  Has anyone else run into this - if so, do you have any suggestions for ideas we could try?  TIA ladies!

  • One thing you can try is any of the milk you are able to pump, mix that with formula.  that is how we weaned natalie to all formula.  Also, you can try switching formulas to see if she likes a different. We used enfamil lipil from the start and had no problems with it!  Good luck, I know its tough!

  • I'd definitely try mixing the two to start out, as pp said.  Also try other brands... we use the Enfamil Lipil without a problem.  Our daycare uses Good Start, and one thing is for sure, it doesn't smell as bad as Enfamil, so maybe the taste is better too!

It might just be that it will take a bit to get used to.  We found that with fruit for Tori.  She makes such a funny scrunched up face with some fruits, but then she opens her mouth for more right away!

  • I definitely agree with the previous posters....try mixing breastmilk with formula.  Maybe start slowly with 3 parts bm, 1 part formula.  We've always used Similac so I can't attest to the taste problem.

Don't be completely discouraged from sticking to all breastmilk either.  There are all sorts of resources out that can help build up your milk supply again.  I've had problems recently, but I tried a little Fenugreek as well as pumping more frequently and I think it has helped.  Kellymom.com has some great suggestions.   GL to you!

  • I would suggest just doing everything to increase your supply.  There are lots of groups in the area that can give suggestions, or you can google lots of natural ideas too.  Also, the Eco-Friendly Family board would probably have suggestions for natural ways to increase supply.
