Goat cheese

I am so confused about this soft cheese thing. I know they say for pregnant women to stay away from soft cheeses, but what if there are pasteurized. I want to order a salad from the restaurant that has goat cheese on it and it's pasteurized is that OK eat?

  • If you live in the United States, nearly all soft cheese is fine. Regulations require that soft cheeses that come into the United States be made from pasteurized milk or be aged for much longer. Unless you like a really smelly cheese, like epoisses, then your soft cheeses ARE pasteurized. This means soft, buttery cheeses like Brie, goat cheeses like chèvre, and fresh cheeses like mozzarella are all pasteurized and safe to consume during pregnancy.
    By the way, cheese like parmigiano reggiano are made from unpasteurized milk, but due to aging are completely safe to eat.

  • Yes and no. Fresh goat cheese from pastuerized milk is incredibly safe. The problems happen when soft cheese is exposed to listeria either before packaging (very, very, very highly unlikely in the US) or after the package has been opened. The higher moisture content of soft cheeses is more hospitable for listeria to grow. So, the goat cheese that's been sitting open in your fridge, you should probably heat before eating. Fresh goat cheese at a restaurant can't possibly stick around longer than a day or two and is subject to such strong anti-contamination rules that you're probably as safe as you are with general produce.
