VASA PREVIA...?! :-( How is your doctor managing your vasa previa?

Hello, I was recently diagnosed with vasa previa at 20 weeks. Feeling scared, concerned, lost, but so thankful it was diagnosed. I am now 22 weeks and have seen a Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist and have had a vaginal ultrasound to confirm the diagnoses. My OBGYN/MFM doctor have me on 100% pelvic rest, no lifting over 20 lbs, and no exercise. I will have vaginal ultra sounds every two-three weeks with my MFM doctor and monitor the baby and normal checks with my OB ever 2-3 weeks as well. I will start steroid injections at 28 weeks for the babies lung development, and have a scheduled C-section by 35-36 weeks. I was also told that most woman will notice light bleeding as they grow, because more pressure will be put on the cervix and placenta, if I notice and spotting or blood tonight for example, I will be admitted to the hospital for 100% monitoring until my C-section. Just wondering if this sounds like my doctors are doing the right plan for a successful pregnancy with vasa Previa?

  • I don't have vasa previa I only have previa however I was admitted for a few days after my first spotting and released on modified bed rest. After my second spotting they admitted me again and then I had a fair sized bleed. I'm in the hospital now until 32 weeks at least and possibly up until delivery.
  • I'm currently in the hospital for Vasa Previa with VCI. I'm 33w today and was admitted last weekend at 31w6d.

My VP was diagnosed at 22w. I had ultrasounds with MFM every 3 weeks. at 28 weeks I started 2x/week non stress tests and fluid checks, which continued until I was admitted. Now in the hospital I have 1 NST/day, I started with 2 but they reduced to 1. I had steroid shots the first 2 days I was here. I have vitals and spot checks on the baby every shift and if anything changes, I notify the nurse right away. I have a C-section scheduled right now for 35w4d, but it is likely to change. Letting me go beyond 35w depends on testing & ultrasounds next week to check my cervix length.

I have not had any bleeding up until this point. If I were to have any bleeding at this point, it'd be an immediate c/s. The International VPA recommends hospitalization between 30-32 weeks. I'd talk to your doctor about without bleeding.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

  • Thank you johnson617! I really have to get through each day trying not to worry, because stress is not good for the baby. It's so good to hear that you have made it this far and are doing well, getting great care from your doctors. I will pray for you. I have an appointment tomorrow, I am going to mention to my normal OB what the International VPA recommends hospitalization between 30-32 weeks.
  • There are management guidelines at the international Vasa Previa Foundation website you can show to your doctor. The hardest thing for me was being my own advocate, there is a lot of misinformation out there on VP, even amongst experienced OBs. As I said in my previous post, I had hospital bed rest at 32 weeks and delivery at 34 weeks, in line with the VP guidelines. It took me a couple different MFM consults until I was comfortable with one to manage the pregnancy. The one I eventually chose started off the appointment by sharing literature with me on the condition, a detailed ultrasound he performed himself, and his recommendations were spot on in line with the VP foundation. I felt great the entire pregnancy with no bleeding or complications. I remember the morning of my c section, I asked the MFM if I should wait another week and go to 35. He told me not to chance it. There is a Study out of NOrthwestern which looks and risks vs. timeline. 34 weeks was thought to be the optimal time. My LO was in the NICU for a relatively short time and is perfect now, almost 2 years old. All the best to you!

  • My doctor said no c section till 39 weeks and I've had this vasa previa for a while
  • Is anyone still on this board?
  • I currently have Vasa Previa and I'll be 29 weeks Monday. I'll be having a scheduled c section at 35 weeks and admitted into the hospital around 31 weeks
  • Glad I found this post. I'm struggling to get appropriate medical care.

Here's the short version: I was diagnosed at my anatomy scan at 18 weeks with placenta previa, succenturiate placenta with velamentous cord insertion, and vasa previa. The MFM who read the scan explains that I would have increased ultrasound monitoring (in 8 weeks!) and an early c-section. He told me the condition would not go away/change. At my next appointment, my ob put me on pelvic rest, told me no lifting over 10 pounds, and no exercise.

Fast forward to 26 weeks. I had a second scan and the ultrasound tech (I didn't get to talk with the MFM), said the placenta previa was now low lying placenta and no vessels were visualized within 2cm of the os. At my next ob appointment, my dr said everything was clear and I was no longer high risk. I was not comfortable with this and told her I wanted to deliver at a hospital with a nicu by c-section because of the risks associated with vasa previa. She told me she could not do either of these things and believed a c-section to be "medically unnecessary".

I've consulted by email with a retired ob. She agreed with delivering at a facility with a nicu and strongly recommended a c-section no later than 37 weeks. Unfortunately, she lives out of state and couldn't recommend anyone where I live.

I'm getting a second opinion with another ob on Wednesday. Fingers crossed it goes well.

  • I was just diagnosed last night with complete placenta previa. I'm a registered nurse, 18W6D pregnant, on bedrest until I can see my OB again monday. Did I mention, I'm terrified?
  • I went for an ultrasound today and they think I have vasa previa. Have to go see a specialist this week to confirm. Scared!! I've already had minor bleeding (dark brown) the past two weeks off and on.
