Not looking so much for whether Luke is factually a full name (it goes back at least to biblical times), but rather whether you perceive it as a nickname. Hope that makes sense, and thank you!
Is Luke a stand-alone name or nick name? 131 votes
It's both. But I if I met someone named Luke, I would not assume it's a NN for Lucas, but if I was told it was a NN I would not be surprised. It's not like if I met someone named Nick, which I would assume is a NN for Nicholas.
I have never perceived it as a nickname. To me, Luke and Lucas are two entirely different names and the Lucas's I have met go by Lucas. It certainly can be a nickname, but Luke is a name in its own right. Both are lovely names.
So, technically Luke is derived from Lucas (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luke_(name) which I guess means that strictly speaking it is a nickname, but if it goes back to 90 AD and biblical Luke found it formal enough to use in his gospel.....I'm fine with it as its own name, but DH is being a stickler. Good to hear the majority of ppl think it can stand alone, but sounds like a vocal minority don't see it!
My nephew is Luke. The school and activity programs sometimes write out Lucas. The unfortunate part of being just Luke is that somehow he has gotten the nickname of Lukey.

But I hasn't ever thought about Luke from the bible being his full name. Good point.
