Baby's Position & Movement

This is a question for STMs.

My LO is currently kicking it breach, I'm not worried because it is so early and she's still pretty small with plenty of time to move but it got me wondering how much she may move and shift as time goes on.

In your previous pregnancies, how often did your baby's position change between ultrasounds? Any words of wisdom or insights you can share from experience?

I may not be much help because DS didn't do what was typical, but I'll respond so that you get a range of experiences. My understanding is that it's very common for baby to change position in the first and second trimesters, then settle in during the third.

DS was transverse for a while, then settled head down, in the prime position by 20 weeks and seemed to stay like that for a while. Around week 32, he spun so he was sunny side up. I noticed a difference in how I felt and saw his kicks which made this obvious; my OB confirmed it. Then, at the end of my 38th week, he flipped to frank breech position. I felt him turn overnight-- it was sort of painful to be honest, because things were tight at that point. I knew he was okay because I kept feeling movement and such (he was kicking my bladder like crazy!) Again, my OB confirmed it at an appointment and u/s the next day. I have a slightly heart-shaped uterus which apparently raises my likelihood of later term breech position to around 50%. Usual likelihood (from beginning of pregnancy) of breech baby at term is 4%.

Really what this all boils down to is, expect baby to continue to move and, unless you have an irregular shaped uterus, the chance that your baby will remain breech is low.

As the baby gets bigger, most doctors will tell you how to feel for certain body parts from the outside so you'll be able to get a rough idea of what position they're in if you can't tell from their movements.

Edit because the end of my response got cut off the first time.

  • My son was all over the place and settled into a head down position in the the 3rd trimester. I'm impressed that you even know what position she is in right now. Basically, there are plenty of other things to worry about right now. Don't stress over that.

  • At this stage in the game, LO has enough room to do backflips, stretch out, twerk, everything. Baby could be in a completely different position at each US and you might start feeling flutters/kicks/jabs anywhere from around your belly button to your cervix (that lightening crotch is a biotch!). As you get deeper into the second and third trimesters, baby gets cramped, but can still change position. I think most OBs/MWs have a certain point they are most comfortable saying if the baby is in its final position, but surprisingly, they can still move a little even in the later weeks. I personally have no experience past 34 wks, but my little dude was already head down (I distinctly remember the bizarre sensation of having to readjust because he got a foot stuck in my lowest rib as I was bending over...very creepy!) Some OBs will even externally rotate a breech baby so they are head down before delivery.

  • I couldn't really tell what position DD was in until well into 20+ weeks. During that time I could feel her flipping around and doing crazy things all the time. I would randomly see knees, elbows, and a butt sticking out really far and moving all across my stomach. So I could usually figure out where she was/where she was moving to. Probably around 30 weeks I think she settled into her long-term position. I could feel her head in my left hip and her feet in my ribs on my right side and her butt was settled somewhere in the middle.

At this point it's perfectly normal for babies to move around however they please. I don't think it's hard to figure out position once you get into 3rd tri though, and your doctor will likely check position at all of your appointments in the 3rd tri as well.
  • Thank you for the thoughtful responses! To clarify, I only know she was breach because they told me at our ultrasound this weekend. I haven't felt her move yet.
