Breast pads???

Starting to stock up on things like nappies and breast pads. I'm currently 28 weeks and am planning on breast feeding. How many breast pads would you reccommend in stocking up on and how many will I need in the hospital? Also will I start to leak milk before birth. First time mum so have so many questions. TIA xx

Re: Breast pads???

  • This is one of those things that varies so much from woman to woman. I personally never needed breast pads due to leaking. I still did use a few my first week when I was regularly using lanolin on my nipples to keep the ointment from getting on my clothing.

From my friends that relied on breast pads due to leaking, it really seems like there is a great deal of personal preference for reusable versus disposable. So my advice, don't worry about stocking up. But a few, try them out, get more if you like them. If you don't like them, try something else.

And my hospital provided disposable breast pads. They were awesome in the amount of stuff they provided.

  • Awe thank you :) I might just buy two boxes of disposable ones then and see how I get on. Think I'm trying to be too organised hehe
  • I would advise against stocking up. PP had good advice. I bought a large box of disposable breast pads and ended up using them only a couple times. I rarely leaked and then breastfeeding was not successful due to horrifically low supply.

You never know what's going to happen. You might not need them at all, or you might need them but decide you hate the kind you stocked up on.

Get a small amount (you may even receive some samples) and then buy more as you need them.
  • I agree with pp's. Every woman is different in this area. My closest friends all said they never leaked and didn't need them. I on the other hand have a very overactive "letdown" (when it's time to feed it all just comes leaking out, when baby is on one side the other is leaking, etc) so I ended up getting the reusable ones. I found they were the most comfortable and absorbant plus they could be washed and reworn. There are so many options so if you insist on getting some just do like pp's stated and try a few different ones but don't stock up. :)

  • I don't leak, but like PP I use them to protect my clothing from lanolin, which leaves a greasy stain.

In the hospital I didn't use them at all...I wore a hospital gown the whole time and just used either lanolin or a gel pad. I wore gel pads in my nursing tank on the way home.

I made my own because the commercial ones are so expensive. I leaked when going to the restroom, when ANY baby cried (grocery store or Pedi's office). I don't know if you will need them. If you do leak expect to change the pads every 4 hours... so that's 6 sets for a day (24 pads).

You want to make sure if you get the reuseable cloth that you keep them incredibly clean.

  • I bought a big box of the lansinoh brand disposables. They were my favorite with my daughter so I got them again this time. With my daughter I only leaked for two months-ish but barely. This time I'm already leaking more from my right than my left and significantly more than I did the last time. I still only go through 2-3 sets a day.
  • I bought a box of disposables, it's still unopened as I haven't leaked once since giving birth.
  • I have a leftover box from the last kid. I leak like crazy, also when breastfeeding your other boob will leak so they're useful to keep that at bay. I actually bought some bamboobies to try so hopefully those will work. I would buy some lanolin and gel pads. Another thing I couldn't have done without in the first week was my sleep bra. They were way to engorged to wear a regular one,

  • I never had to use breast pads with DD#1, but I had a friend that leaked so much one time she stuffed a diaper in her bra.
  • I loved the reusable pads called bamboobies.

  • Bamboobies has a free bundle for WTE members :) 1 pair of washable pads and 1 sample of nip cream
  • I personally go through 2 sets a day of the Lansinoh ones when I'm nursing.  I like to stock up with the giant packs on amazon.  As a FTM though I wouldn't stock up too much since you don't know how your boobs will react.

  • I received an email from Bamboobies, because I was a WTE member. So, when you go to the Bamboobies bundles, you add the Bundle 1 to your cart. The discount code is WTEfree. You will need to pay for shipping..I think it's $3 :) hope it helps you!

You also get this bundle free if you purchase $30 or more of their products.
  • Thank you! I just got mine :)

  • I started leaking weeks after birth when my milk was really coming in.  I preferred disposable contoured shaped ones, but everyone is different.
