Traveling for the holidays

We will be flying to visit family for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. I saw the other post that had great tips on what gear to bring, but I have 2 questions about feedings-

I have been pumping for months and now my daughter will only take a bottle. We have a layover on the first trip so we will be traveling basically all day. What is the best way to express milk while you are not home?

I am planning on bringing breastmilk in a cooler bag, but my daughter wont drink it if it's cold. How can I warm her bottles on the plane/ at airport? I am hoping the bathrooms have hot water I can put her bottle under.

Any advice? Thanks!

Re: Traveling for the holidays

  • If airport security doesn't make you throw it out
I'm sure any coffee shop/restaurant will give you a cup of hot water to warm your milk in.
And just ask a flight attendant for hot water as well.

  • I flew when LO was 2 1/2 months. My friend works for an airline, so I asked him some questions. He said the flight attendants love babies and will do whatever they can to help you. Like PP said, I'm sure they can get you some hot water. I nursed my LO on the flight, so I can't help you there. But usually when I need to feed him with a bottle, I just take it out a little bit before to get to room temperature, so that may be another option. You'll do great!
  • Separate the milk in appropriate travel oz :) you can also run the bottle under warm water if you are desperate, I have done that Haha as for gear, use multi use gear and quick and easy gear. So like a baby carrier instead of a big stroller. Or a backpack for a diaper bag instead of a purse, then you have your hands free. A travel bassinet that can be used as a bed and also as a napping place or something to take on the go. Travel size shampoo, lotion, etc. use advantage of the washing machine so you don't need to take too much clothing and blankets. You can buy diapers there so you don't need to lug it around. Don't worry you will be great :)
  • I've seen travel bottle warmers. Or a cheaper option would be to go to the camping section at Wal-Mart and buy a bunch of hand warmer packs - the ones where you shake or crinkle them to activate. They're like $1 each I think. Then rubber band them around the bottle, shouldn't take too long to heat up.
  • Thanks everyone! Any ideas on pumping? I currently pump 6 times a day and can't picture myself sitting at the terminal hooked up to a breastpump. I really wish my daughter would let me nurse her, then it wouldn't be an issue.

Some airports have minute suites and private nursing rooms.

  • I have pumped in handicap restrooms most have a charger! Not the most fun but atleast its private!
  • I traveled without my baby at 2 months. I brought my pump with me. Some airports now have Mother's Rooms, which was great. For one airport that didn't, they have the family restroom that is its own individual bathroom. I went there to pump. I also brought all my milk with me in a cooler on the trip home. I had about 6-8oz of milk in each milk bag and had a good 8 bags of milk. I went through security just fine. I just told them I had it. You can have breast milk in as much quanity as you want.
  • Think about getting a hand pump. I bought the Medela harmony. It works fine and is a lot more convient for travel then getting the PISA set up. Plus only one set of parts to clean since its single breast.
  • @krissyberb Do you get as much milk with a hand pump as the PISA? Or is it more just to get comfortable?
  • It's pretty close, maybe a bit less with the hand pump. What I do is move back and forth between breasts--when the flow slows down I move to the other breast and repeat that cycle 2-3 times. I just hate getting the PISA out and set up when I'm not at home or work.
