Liquid versus powdered formula, advice

For those experienced moms out there, I'd like some input. My two week old boy is on breastmilk with us supplementing liquid formula when he needs it. He doesn't have a lot of gas issues, but it's sometimes hard to get a burp out of him. The liquid formula is very expensive, so DH and I were considering using the powdered formula but a couple of friends had bad experiences with the powder, saying it caused way more gas. Any input? Did anyone use the powder and have no trouble, or did a lot of you use the powder and have the same issues?

Re: Liquid versus powdered formula, advice

  • I have the same amount of gas on liquid or powder. My recommendation is to see on the powder if your pediatrician has sample cans, that way you can try it with out spending too much.

  • Sometimes all the shaking of mixing up the powdered formula causes bubbles, which cause gas. If you use powdered formula, mix it in a different container, then slowly pour it into the bottle. Let it settle for 3-5 minutes before feeding it to LO.
  • I second having the bottle sit. I usually premake my bottles for the day which gives them to settle then I just warm them up as I need them. We prefer liquid "ready to feed" but we're switching LO's formula and powder was the only type available in store.

Add gas drops in the bottle so it eats the air bubbles caused by mixing
  • We started with liquid for over a week since I felt better about it being already properly mixed, until our pedi said powder was fine. A big relief since powder is SO much cheaper. We actually invested in a baby brezza now that we know we're sticking with powder which makes life much easier. It's expensive, like $160 kind of expensive, but I do not regret it for a second. LO seems to be doing fine on the powder. Yes, definitely more gas with the powder, but it works fine and he's full and happy after eating. He has a tendency to spit up but formula in general is not an exact science. Most babies take adjusting to figure out which formula works best for them. Also, I started getting in the habit of keeping him up on my shoulder after he burps and reading a story. It's keeps him upright long enough for the formula to settle in his tummy and that made a HUGE difference.
  • We started supplementing with liquid formula (Similac Sensitive) since that's what the hospital provided. We later switched to powder and our LO has been spitting up quite a bit. We purchased gas drops last night and switched to enfamil for fussiness and gas but she is still spitting up. We have reduced the amount we are feeding her, from 4 ounces to 2 ounces, thinking she was spitting up bc she's overeating, yet she just spit up twice and I only fed her 2 ounces. Sitting her upright afterwards and burping as well. The formula says it takes 24 hours to see results so we'll see. All I can say is she was not spitting up like this with the liquid but idk for sure if the problem is liquid vs powder. The formula I just fed her was premixed and had time to settle before feeding and she still spit up twice. I am frustrated. I know spitting up is normal for babies and doesn't hurt but I hate that it's happening so often
  • Thanks for all the input. It's so hard to know what to do- I don't want to throw money away but I hate seeing my little guy uncomfortable.
  • I have also found putting in a drop of breastmilk gets rid of the bubbles
  • I have been told by my pedi and other pediatric nurses to wait until he is older to try powder, that their digestive systems aren't ready for it quite yet. The ready made alimentum is pricy but worth it.
