Yeast infection - terconazole

Hello ladies,

My culture was positive for a yeast infection and the doctor prescribed terconazole suppositories.
I just started my 14th week and read online about this medication. It states that it can cause birth defects and I am extremely worried. Then again I found an article and some comments from people about a yeast infection possibly causing miscarriages. I'm just looking for advice at this point because I would like to know if anyone else has experience this or is going through it.

Some may say well if the doctor prescribed it then it should be fine. However the reason for my worry is because she prescribed it during my first trimester and said it shouldn't be an issue but the nurse practitioner who works with her said it would be better to use it during the second trimester. This caused me to worry a little bit more because it's ultimately my child and I don't want to hurt it.

Re: Yeast infection - terconazole

  • I don't necessarily have GOOD advice but from what I've read on here the over the counter treatment (I believe it's the 7 day treatment suppositories) is safe to use. Ask a pharmacist. They are very knowledgeable and usually err on the side of caution. GL!

  • My doctor said Monistat was safe to take when I had a yeast infection at 13 weeks. She told me to stay away from anything else but if it didn't clear up quickly to call back. The Monistat did the trick, though. The general consensus online is that it's considered safe, but only the 7 day version is recommended. Good luck! Yeast infections are miserable :(
  • Monistat and the medication prescribed are in the same risk class. I checked the mg on both. The one I have is a three day regimen at 80 mg each whereas monistat is 100 mg for 7 days.

I may be over worrying. I got advice from friends that are pharmacists and others. What's bound to happen will happen - right?
Day one and so far no spotting or irritation.
Fingers crossed. Thank you ladies for replying.
