Baby Carrier Recommendations For Plus Sized Moms

I gave the search engine a shot and didn't find anything specifically regarding plus sized moms and baby wearing. Do any fellow plus sized moms have any glowing recommendations of their favorite carriers? With my first, I had a Baby K'Tan wrap and only really found that comfortable for the first few months while my son was smaller.  This time around I am considering either a Tula or an Ergo (or something similar that can last as this baby number 2 grows). I'm also curious to know if anyone has heard of and/or seen either of these companies offering extenders of any kind? I've scoured each website and couldn't really find anything.

Thanks!

Re: Baby Carrier Recommendations For Plus Sized Moms

  • This is a great question! I didn't even think about it but my husband is larger and regular ones may not fit him either. This is my first so I don't have any good info but thank you so much for asking this!

  • I'm not plus size, but I have 2 tulas-a standard and a toddler, and they both have a very generous amount of adjustment strap, and I have seen on Facebook baby wearing sites that lots of plus sized mamas are comfy in them. Good luck! Baby wearing is the best!
  • We had an ergo with our first baby ten years ago and loved it! It did have an extender you could purchase at the time. It worked out great for us. We didn't use it until our Ds was five months old so not sure how I would have liked it if he was younger.

  • Our Ergo works great (I'm a size 18 jeans) and I have plenty of slack left

  • Ring slings are great because they are so adjustable. My husband is 6'4 and over 300lbs and carried our 2nd in one. I also have a Mai tai type carrier that has super long straps that I'm sure would be great too. I can't remember the brand I have but there are a ton of different ones you can get.
  • So many good responses and suggestions, thanks to all who replied! I feel a little more at ease now with the available options
  • My Beco also has a ton of extra room if you are looking c into buckle carriers. A ring sling would be good for the early days and for quick carries once baby is bigger. Sakura Bloom, Beco, Tula, are some brands you could look into for those. You can order those in larger sizes or smaller sizes. Depending on your budget and your size you may also look at an infant/plus kinder pack for a buckle carriers. They are the only ones I know of where you can actually order it plus, but the are a bit pricey. If you don't hate the idea of wrapping, I would also recommend looking at a MeiTei. You can find those for $30 at Target all the way to wrap converted ones for more. Your choice. I know Baby Hawk is a good brand for Mei Tei's and I know a lot of people who love their Infantino one, which is the one you can usually get for pretty cheap. Happy Babywearing!

  • Oh! Also, check to see if there is a Babywearing group around you. Most groups have lending libraries and friendly members who will let you try things on before you purchase. You will gains wealth of knowledge from them if there is one close. I HIGHLY recommend it!

  • Awesome tip, thanks!
  • Another vote for checking out a Babywearing International group's lending library! They'll help you find the best one for you and baby before you go dropping tons of cash on different carriers trying to find one you love.
  • We have a Beco Gemini and it says it can fit up to a 59" waist and adults up to 6'5". It's a great carrier!

  • I am plus size and have a terrible back. I did a TON of research before I bought ours. We ended up with the Boba 4G carrier. I LOVE IT. I recommend it to everyone!
  • I am plus sized and had no troubles with a standard Ergo or Kinderpack. I've also tried on Obimama mei tais that my "skinny" friends use, and those fit fine, too.
