Need advice after unprotected sex on day 6 of birth control

Okay, I'm 6 weeks postpartum and DH and I got a little carried away tonight and forgot to use a back up form of contraception. I know that sounds lame that we "forgot" but being pregnant for 40 weeks and having an IUD for 2 years before that, we just got used to not having to use back up! So, my questions:

1) I've been reading that BC is effective after day 7 of taking the pill, since I'm only on day 6..should I go ahead and use emergency contraception? I'm thinking yes, but DH thinks close enough. I think day 6 does not equal day 7.

2) I plan to ask my Dr and the pharmacist but if I take emergency contraception, can I continue my birth control pills or will those cancel the effectiveness?
Also, if it does cancel the effectiveness, how soon after the EC can I begin a new cycle of pills? I know BC is usually started on the Subday after your period...but I haven't had a period postpartum yet and I don't know when that will be. Could I just begin a new cycle of pills a week or so later?

Again, I plan to ask my dr all these questions but I'd like some feedback from anyone who has taken emergency contraception. DH and I are not ready for baby #2 yet so we want to make sure we take the EC correctly!

Thanks!

  • MOST people won't get pregnant so soon after having a baby due to hormones, so you should be good. That being said, I know a woman who found out TWICE that she was pregnant at her 6 week pp appointment.
  • Loading the player...
  • Definitely make sure you take the EC ASAP, there is a 3 day time frame. I took it on the fourth day in January and now I have my sweet baby girl!
  • I wouldn't risk it, from my understanding you are still very fertile for the first year after having the baby.
  • I thought it was the opposite and you are extremely fertile after having a baby.i would definitely ask your doctor about emergency contraception
  • Just in case anyone has the same questions as me, I wanted to share my experience - I took EC the first day and stopped my current BC. The pharmacist suggested I stop my current BC so I wouldn't overload my body with hormones since the EC has such a large dose.

Since we don't know when my actual period will show up, they said I could start a new pack of BC pills in a few days.

    Thanks for everyone's advice!
