Restless Legs-Vent

So here I am again...awake at 2:50 am due to RLS. Cannot stop crying-hubby doesn't understand at all. I laid in bed for 3 hours tossing and turning. He comes to bed and within 30 seconds has fallen asleep and is snoring epically loud. Dr. says it's just one of those things-there's nothing that can be done. I've tried all sorts of stretches, warm bath, bananas, no caffeine ect... and nothing helps. Anyone else out there struggling with this and found any relief?

Re: Restless Legs-Vent

  • Not RLS but I have Tourette's Syndrome so I feel your pain. Recently I did find with leg cramps that drinking a little Gatorade everyday makes a huge difference. Bananas only really help if you're low in potassium. I've also found massage to be helpful. When I can I get hubby to give me a leg massage with peppermint lotion. It doesn't last long but feels so much more comfortable for a little while after.

I also find I get some release with balance training. A basic one for the legs is just to get on all fours and stretch one leg out straight behind you while trying to keep your back and hips in line (imagine balancing a bowl of water on your back). To make it harder you can stretch out opposite arm and leg together.

I hope you can find some relief.

  • I have RLS and have a bed with a vibrating base. It has been a lifesaver. Maybe if you have a back massager you could use it on your legs, or have your husband rub them for you until you get some relief. For me, feeling any kind of movement on them helps. Hang in there...
  • I have it too. Always worse during pregnancy ... The only things that will stop it in the moment for me is to get up and walk ... And how miserable is that in the middle of the night when you're exhausted??
Aside from that, for me, sugar makes it much worse. If I have a little too much dessert before bed my legs go crazy.
I like the PP idea of vibration! I can imagine that working really well.
And I also feel frustrated about explaining it to DH or others ... Hard to understand if you've never felt it.

I find people to understand better if you explain it feeling g a little like that sneeze you just can't get out but it keeps building anyway. Most know what that feels like so it gives them something familiar to relate it to.
  • Yes massage, and stretching before bed, a warm bath, eating a banana and then making sure I take magnesium/calcium supplements a couple times a day. Have you had your iron levels checked, a lot of time in pregnancy this is the culprit. The mag/calcium has seemed to help me the most, I just do the other things just in case. Someone told me a heating pad at the bedside for When you wake up but I have not tried that yet.
  • I have it too but it comes when I'm really tired so it's kind of more of a hint to go to sleep.

  • Have your husband rub/squeeze them!!!! It's truly the only way I can find any relief... Maybe it's because it gets blood to the area??

I have had horrible RLS. Keeps me up. But i tend to have RLS when I am super tired, which is stupid because by the time I start RLS symptoms they keep me from falling asleep. Benadryl and OTC sleep aid makes it sooooo much worse. Sometimes a really large pillow in between my legs helps, a small or average height pillow does nothing to help. :( maybe if you haven't tried one of those super huge firm fluffy pillows (pretty much a couch cushion) you could try that!
  • I have heard magnesium helps but I haven't seen the research to back that claim up. Magnesium is one of the 4 main electrolytes, the other 3 are sodium, potassium and calcium. Magnesium is often found in calcium supplements. You could also google some high magnesium foods and see if adding any of those vegetables, nuts or seeds help.
  • I have that too. Epsom salt bath, husband massage, and Epsom salt cream are gelpful. So is biofreeze. Sorry girl it's awful!
  • I occasionally have this issue as well. It's particularly bad if I've been inactive that day. Stretching and a warm bath has worked reasonably well for me. It hurts so bad though! I panicked thinking I had a blood clot in my leg the last time it happened.
  • I don't have it really bad. But I do experience that nagging feeling in my legs. I take 2 regular Tylenol before bed and I find that it helps immensely. Best of luck. Not too much longer!!
  • Thank you for all the replies! I'm trying out every suggestion at this point and tonight (knock on wood) I do feel a little bit of relief. Thankfully, I know this will be temporary and just keep reminding myself that I don't have much longer! Thank you all for letting me have somewhere to vent and for all the helpful suggestions! :)
  • My massage therapist suggests rolling a tennis ball around under your feet to massage the soles of them, which apparently helps with restless legs.. It feels really nice cause the ball is just firm enough to give a good, but dull pressure.. I do it from the couch when I'm watching telly x
  • Put a bar of soap under your bedsheets where your feet are. I did this and it improved after one night and completely went away after 3. I've no idea how it works but was so annoyed I eventually tried it. You have nothing to lose.
