Laxative

I was unable to find a thread with the information I needed in it so here goes.....

I took a stimulant laxative. Has anyone done this? I'm really worried now. I only took one thinking it would be harmless, but the better part of me started googling whether or not it was a safe choice and I could not get a straight answer. Any advice would be appreciated!

Re: Laxative

  • My OB recommended trying a stool softener before using a laxative, but includes both types on the safe medication list.

The laxative will be more likely to cause cramping which is why a softner is preferable. You can always call the nurse line for peace of mind to get more information.

  • Laxatives are fine as long as you don't take them all the time. That's what my midwife told me.

  • Yes. Docusate is the go-to because laxatives are more likely to cause cramping, diarrhea and dehydration. However, taking just 1 laxative is not going to be that intense. Just try to use docusate first if you still need one. Also be aware that it can take up to 6 hours to work, so you might want to take one at night before bed then you'll know if you'll either be ready to go in the morning or need a second dose.
  • I take two stool softeners daily and it's really helped keep things manageable. As PPs said, occasional laxatives are totally fine.

  • My midwife recommended psyllium husk. It's a natural relaxer and really works well without the laxative properties. It's a bit gross, but I mix it with orange juice and drink quickly! Have had no problems since using it.
  • Wow this thread has rocked my world!  I hate pregnancy constipation!  I had no idea any laxatives were safe.  I usually take 1 stool softener/day and it helps keep things moving...a little.  Once in a while I think I would feel so much better if I could just have a 'good' BM, and they rarely happen on their own regardless of how much fiber I eat or water I drink.

  • .. Coffee works for me lol as simple as it sounds
  • I just spoke with my OB about this on Monday. Constipation has been my biggest issue this pregnancy. She recommended taking a laxative called senna 2 times per day in addition to a stool softener. They sell it as a combo pill as well.

I have tried about everything for this! I try to avoid meds when possible and have found pear juice works wonders as well as psyllium husk powder ( add to smoothie or protein shake). The more water you drink the better :) hope this helps you too !!

Edit **** Oh and citranatal harmony brand prenatal vitamin has a nice stool softener in it..can't say it's helped a ton but it's worth a try!

  • I take two softeners a day and today I just started magnesium citrate. Just the softeners aren't keeping things moving. It sucks!!

  • Unfiltered fresh apple/carrot juice works wonders too.  I couldn't get off the toilet after that combo (sorry TMI).

By unfiltered you mean you put apples and carrots in a juicer? Or is this something I can buy premade? Just curious for future reference!

Yes I did mean that, but you can buy unfiltered apple juice.  It looks very very cloudy.  And holy crap does it taste good compared :) I've bought Knudsen before (if you have access to that brand).

  • I have had stomach issues for years and occasionally take sennakot (laxative) if necessary. The doctor said it is fine to do so during pregnancy as well. A nurse just recommended heating up prune juice. I haven't tried it yet but will likely do so if issues occur again. I'd prefer not to take medication if possible....
