First appointment, bad results

I went to my first appointment yesterday. I should have been right at 8 weeks. It was just for blood work, urine, and lots and lots of questions. When I told her about my ovarian pain she insisted I come back in the afternoon to see the doctor to rule out an ectopic pregnancy. He sent me to ultrasound and said we should be able to see the baby and hear the heartbeat. The U/S tech started abdominally and could only see the sac, so he went in vaginally. I could see the baby and see its little heart beating, but he said it was only measuring 6 weeks. The heartbeat was too faint to be heard and only measured 77bpm.

They put me back in a room while the doctor and tech discussed the ultrasound. I overheard the tech say that he has seen heartbeats this low frequently right at the 6 week mark. When the doctor came back to speak with me he kept asking if I was 100% sure about the date of my last period. I am sure. He told me it's not bad news yet, but it isn't good news either. I go back in one week to get another ultrasound and see if there is any growth. I am so devastated. I've never been so happy in my life as I have been the last few weeks.

My husband isn't being helpful either. When I texted him to tell him what was going on (I couldn't call. He was at work and told me to keep him updated on everything) he just said "ok hun." He never asked if I was ok. He never asked how I was feeling. It's like I am falling apart and he doesn't care. I ask if he's ok and he just says fine and won't talk to me. I feel like I might as be married to a brick wall... at least it would give me something to lean on.

Re: First appointment, bad results

  • Oh my, I am so sorry you are going through this! I know this will probably be the longest week of your life but hopefully there will be some good news. Maybe you just ovulated later than normal. Hang in there, we are here for you.

  • I'm sorry you're going through this. Thoughts and prayers everything goes well next week. Keep us updated. I can understand why you're frustrated with your husband. I'm not sure what kind of work he does, but maybe he just wasn't able to respond right away? I know my husband would want me to keep him updated as well, but he works construction, so I probably would have received a similar answer because he can't always respond right away.

Have the two of you had a chance to talk more about it since you've been home?
  • I'm so sorry you're going through this, and that it doesn't seem like your husband is being supportive. Like PP said, it's entirely possible you ovulated later than you thought. Were you temping? Many, many women don't ovulate in the textbook "average" cycle day 14, so it's possible you actually are only 6 weeks pregnant if you ovulated later.

Hang in there as best you can. Hoping for good news for you next week.
  • Sorry this is how your day has started, hopefully you can talk to your husband soon. I was 10 days later than what a LMP would have showed. Praying for your that your day gets better and that next week has good results as well.

  • It really sounds like you ovulated late. I ovulated 2 weeks late so my last period was sept 1 but I'm only 9 weeks
  • If so all of that sounds normal for 6 weeks
  • I am sending my prayers! All sounds normal for 6 weeks, so I hope you just ovulated late.

  • I'm so sorry that you're going through this.  Sometimes men just don't get it.  He's probably trying not to get too attached.  We don't get that option.  Hopefully, you will be able to talk about it.

  • Thank you all so much for your kind words. I am holding on strongly to the hope that I ovulated late. I'm not ready to give up on this sweet baby.
  • This was our first real try at conceiving. I hadn't received the thermometer I ordered yet.
  • I had a very similar experience. According to my period I would've been 8 weeks when I had my first scan but I measured at 6 weeks 0 days and baby's heart rate was 84bpm. I freaked due to the low heart rate but the tech said the heart begins beating around that time and is expected to be low especially the first day or two of beginning to beat. I went back two weeks later today and am measuring on track at 8 weeks 0 days now. The Heart rate is a healthy 156bpm. I hope this reassures you :). If you have long cycles between periods it can be very normal to ovulate late and be dated back further than what your last period wouldve predicted. Xo
  • I am so sorry. Sending prayers that everything will turn out ok. My husband would say the same thing. I told him they couldn't find the heartbeat yesterday and he said "ok" in text. After we found out everything was fine, he had a lot more to say.

  • Hey, this exact thing happened to me just over 2 weeks ago! And I am still pregnant and still violently ill and all that, so I'm pretty sure nothing has gone horribly awry in there, haha. I was also 100% sure of my dates but then they had to go in vaginally to even see the baby and could just see the heartrate. It was a totally normal US...for someone 6 weeks pregnant (I was over 8 weeks according to my dates). Just an irregular cycle/late ovulation. Don't panic, you're just not quite where you thought you were yet.
  • Praying your next scan shows a hearty 7wker! FX for you and your LO.
  • Lurking from the May board.. I had my first ultrasound when I was 8w1d (based on LMP), and the baby was measuring 6w4d. I want to say the heart rate was around 80bpm (I know it was < 100). I worried a lot about it, especially after they told me I needed to take a progesterone supplement. I went back to the doctor yesterday, and everything looks good! They did another ultrasound, and I got to hear the heartbeat. Baby is measuring on target with what they measured the first time (10w5d).

I know it's frustrating, and I hope everything is okay.

Thoughts and prayers your way. I've gotten 2 different EDD and neither match going by my last period. Most importantly, keep your thoughts positive and try not to stress. Easier said than done I'm sure. As PP said, men don't get attached or as emotional this early on. If it comes down to it, be honest; share your thoughts, worries, disappointment and needs to him.
  • Husbands suck at times don't they! Try and stay hopeful a heart beat is a heart beat :) Thoughts and prayers are going out to you !

  • Oh honey! I can totally relate and currently commiserate. I hope you are hearing what your doctor and us tech said. It's not necessarily good, but it's not necessarily bad, and they see this sort of thing all the time at 6 weeks. I went in at 7w3d and baby measured just under 6w. My second doctor (first one only gave me the option to d&c but there was a heartbeat!) told me they see this sort of thing all the time, and to come back in one week. Babies all grow at different rates, and though typically they are the same in the early weeks, things happen. Sometimes baby is also eluding the scan! My second ultrasound my lil guy was hiding up in the corner of the sac, making it harder for the doc to measure. I go back on Monday, and will be thinking of you.
As for your husband, it's so hard for them in so many ways. The pregnancy isn't happening to them, their bodies aren't changing and forming bonds. My husband felt the overwhelming need to be strong for me when I miscarried in August. What I wanted is for him to FEEL WITH ME. There are growing pains with any new experience. Trust that neither of you know how to navigate this emotionally, and allow each other room to figure that out. Try to be open and honest, and try to let him be there the best way he can figure right now. Sending you love! Hang in there!
