Blood pressure issues?

Has anyone else had low blood pressure issues?  I have been having dizziness when I stand and yesterday I came very close to passing out.  I saw our school nurse and my blood pressure was 92/59.  She told me to go home and rest since I already have an appointment scheduled for this afternoon.  I've not dealt with bp issues with any other pregnancies and I don't have any other problems going on.  Has anyone dealt with this before or does anyone have any advice on how to deal with low blood pressure?

Re: Blood pressure issues?

  • Blood pressure drops during pregnancy - this is normal as your blood vessels relax in preparation to handle the increased blood volume.   Be sure you're staying well-hydrated AND eating salt - the salt will help hold on to your blood volume which will keep your BP up.  As background, I'm a cardiology nurse, and my blood pressure normally runs low on the low side, so I've got personal and professional experience with this:)

  • I have low-normal blood pressure normally and it's definitely a struggle in the first trimester. I don't think it's necessarily abnormal or worrisome, just an unfortunate side effect. Just be very conscious of never changing position (sitting/standing) too fast and sitting down to rest if you feel faint. Keep well fed and hydrated. And don't spend a lot of time standing around near cliffs or ledges, lol.
  • I have naturally low blood pressure, it's usually around 100/58. I'm kind of used to it but I do get lightheaded easily. I just make sure I eat enough and drink fluids so I don't exasperate anything. I'd definitely ask your doctor about it though. I'm sure they'll want to keep an eye on it and at least know about it. I don't think it's anything to worry too much about but it's definitely annoying and can feel scary
  • Hydrate hydrate hydrate. I've always been on the low side of BP (100/60 is a good day for me) and find its worse if I'm dehydrated. Move from sitting to standing or laying to sitting slowly, if you get dizzy, get your head below your heart. Sugar also tends to help me a little bit.

In early pregnancy, the blood vessels dialate and blood plasma volume increases which makes you more likely to get light headed as well.
  • Thanks ladies!  I am definitely hydrated.  I will try the salt and sugar suggestions and see if that helps.

  • I agree with others.  HYDRATE!  I hope you are feeling better soon.  Our birth mother is having issues with high bp rather than low so I don't have personal experience.
