I have no idea what the best or right way to do things is but I wipe when he's poopy and use a little diaper cream if I think he needs it and when he's just wet I don't wipe I just put on a fresh diaper unless I can actually see pee on him and then I'll wipe. I basically try to change his diaper as soon as I notice he is wet or poopy and use as few extra products (wipes, powders, creams) as possible.
My girlfriend swears by powder, she said that she's used it in every single diaper change since her little girl was born a year and a half ago… And that she's never had diaper rash.
I bought some but I've never used it, and I'm just wondering if it's something I should start doing or if I should just wait until she shows signs of needing it? Ideally I would want to make sure she never had any issues with rash but I don't know if my friends experience is the norm.
I use a wipe on her every change. Burt's bees makes a 2 in 1 diaper cream and baby powder. It's different from their diaper rash cream (which is super thick). It goes on as a cream and dries into more of a powder. I just use it if I notice she's getting a little red and it usually helps her right away. I didn't see it at target with the other Burt's bees baby stuff but babies r us carries it.
I also heard not to use baby powder because it gets into their respiratory system. I use Aquaphor Diaper Cream whenever my LO's bottom gets red, works great!
I use Aquaphor cream with redness too. Usually goes away by the next change or two. I have nothing against baby powder, I just don't want to use it yet until he's older. Baby is only 2 weeks so I try to use as little product of any kind as possible.
You shouldn't use baby powder. Its not good for the skin or respiratory system. Please speak with your pediatrician if you are considering using it.
This is actually outdated. The respitory issue is for talc powder. All baby powder I've seen these days is made of cornstarch. Sprinkling it on the diaper away from their face, they're not going to inhale it anyway.

I've also heard bad things about baby powder. Not only about it getting in their lungs, but talc is a no known carcinogenic. Also, word to the wise, do your research on ingredients in diaper cream. Mineral oil and chemicals are bad for baby, and us! I like coconut oil, it is amazing!

That article does say using it away from their face (in their diaper as discussed here) is ok though.
It does not. After saying it's use is not recommended it goes on to say that if you choose to use it do so sparingly and away from baby's face. That in no way means that it is ok. Just means that if you are going to use it despite the recommendation of the American pediatric association that you not you should be as careful as possible.
I use an all natural diaper rash/anywhere skin cream about every third poopy diaper change. It is made with beeswax, coconut oil, and shea butter. It's cloth diaper safe although I haven't started using the cloth diapers yet.
I don't use it for baby at all. I use it for boob sweat in the summer and for making shoes more comfortable without socks. I'm not against using it on the baby, I just haven't had the need yet.
