July 2016 Moms

What are you reading?

I know most of us will have to wait a while for a first doctor's appointment. This is when I find these boards and books invaluable!

So, what are you reading now? I'm sure a lot of us are gravitating toward pregnancy/baby books, but if you have an NBR book to recommend, that's great, too!

Re: What are you reading?

  • "What to Expect When You're Expecting" was great for my first pregnancy. It's very comprehensive and answered most of my questions. Kinda skimming through it again.

Now I'm rereading "Pregnancy Sucks" because I now the misery is coming and it's nice to have a little humor mixed in with the info and advice.

  • I just started reading Pretty Girls: A Novel.  I am hooked.  Pregnancy books are filled with scary information you're better off not knowing unless you feel like torturing yourself.

"Scary?" So it's better to stick your head in the sand than be educated? That's seems a bit immature TBH. Yes, there's lots of information, but that doesn't mean everything that can go wrong, will. That's a bit of an overreaction.
  • I'm reading 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami. I'm thinking I'll pick up What to Expect When You're Expecting, but I also don't want to be unnecessarily frightened...
  • I'm reading Vanishing Acts by Jodi Picoult, along with some new age books my mom sent me and the Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy. I highly recommend it!

I think maybe you're overreacting to my statement and I'm going to hope that your response to my post was not a direct attack on me.  While there is helpful information and it's interesting to hear the scientific end of things I feel like there's also a lot of places that can leave moms wondering, "What if?"  Just my personal feeling.  I don't really like reading, "If your baby doesn't start to develop this by this date, XYZ won't happen."  There's nothing I can do to help if XYZ is going to happen.  So, for me, I'd rather not read about it.

  •   That all being said, "Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy" was funny and informative and explained things at a high level so it was easy to understand and relatable.  Not at all nerve-racking.

  • I'm reading "The Natural Pregnancy Book" and already love the suggestions about bonding with my little sea monkey and ignoring advice not to get attached until u/s or 12 weeks :) Also grabbed "The Healthy Pregnancy Book" but haven't looked at that one yet. Anyone else have any good hippy dippy style pregnancy books they recommend?? I'm searching for stuff and interested in suggestions!

Not an attack at all. You're original statement basically said knowing anything about your pregnancy was too scary and it's better to be uninformed. My post was a direct response to that. I'm just direct.
  • I'm reading "I Thought I Knew You" by Kate Moretti.  It's pretty good... very eerie.

I wasn't clear in my original post.  You're right. Not all pregnancy information is scary.

  • And... fwiw I never read any pregnancy books. I could find basically anything I needed or wanted to know on the internet (trusted sites of course).  I'm one of those people that googles everything and researches everything (good idea or not) and found all the info I could want on different websites.

I really liked "Easy Labor" by William Canning and Kathryn Alexander. Maybe a better 3 trimester read, though.

It presents the wide range of births, with unbiased information for each and many real women's stories. It really helped me decide what kind of birth I wanted with real facts to back it up. And when my preferred birth couldn't happen (c-section required) I was totally okay with it because it was all about what was safest for me and DD and understood what would happen and how to talk to doctor about my concerns.
  • @noelietrex anything and everything by ina may gaskin, she primarily talks about labor, but she was very very reassuring when I started freaking out about that there first time around!

I'll probably read this one. I've been reading What to Expect but it is scary IMO. After talking about it, someone recommended this one so I'll pick it up :)

  • I'm currently reading pregnancy guides from the Mayo Clinic and the American College of Ob/GYNs.

For fun? I'm about to pick up The Martian because I freaking loved the movie.
  • The Mother of All Pregnancy Books by Ann Douglas. I like that it's Canadian so the info is relevant to the Canadian health care system.

For fun I picked up The Heir by Kiera Cass. The series is absolute fluff (think The Bachelor but the guy is a prince and the chosen girl becomes a princess) but for some reason the girly romantic in me can't get enough of it.
  • I'm probably the only one... But I just hate reading
  • @joyful08 yeah, I'm close to hating it. I would do it if I had time, but that doesn't exist in this household. Everything I read is how to (gardening, build this, do that)
    Does reading The Bump count....?
  • @joyful08 me too! I'm in school full time so reading my government, history, math and science book are enough for me!
  • All my reading at this point in life is whatever my high school students are reading in their English classes right now (I'm a high school resource/special ed teacher). So right now I'm finishing To Kill a Mockingbird again and starting Fahrenheit 451 (one of my favorite school reads). Oh, and The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls...that's a really good one if you like nonfiction/memoirs.

  • Just recently read The Martian, was very good and pretty short. Now back to Game of Thrones series with Storm of Swords, though honestly I have a bit of a hard time following the series. It's getting better though. I haven't seen the show so keeping track of the characters at first was super confusing. Especially since I use Audible and I zone out sometimes...

I'm sure I'll read some pregnancy books but nothing yet. I'm already pretty familiar with pregnancy thanks to family and nursing school so I'll probably mostly stick to studies for specifics. Sometimes it's nice to read something simple and basic though, so I'm sure I'll get around to something. Will watch for recommendations.

  • When it comes to pregnancy books in reading what to expect when you're expecting and another one my doctor gave me.

For fun I'm reading the hobbit for the billionth time :)
I just got The Mindful Mom-To-Be: A Modern Doula's Guide to Building a Healthy Foundation from Pregnancy Through Birth, which I would say goes under hippy dippy lol. It's actually really good so far and I've only made it through her info about month Number 1.

As for fun stuff I just finished Everything I Never told you, which was kind of like the Lovely Bones, I'm in between to other books right now, Judy Blume's In the Unlikely Event and Stiff the Curious life of Human Cadavers(which I'm sure isn't everyone's cup of tea).  If anyone else has a good reads account I'd love to add you :).

  • Hey ladies! Just wanted to recommend some pregnancy reading... Bringing Up Bebe - a book about an American woman living in Paris and the discoveries of French Parenting. The French live a way of parenting opposite of the "Helicopter Mom" we are so inundated with; they parent with an almost laissez faire approach, all the while making their children their top priority without the overindulgence. She has great stats and anecdotes in this book that have really made me want to be more of a chill, French mom! Check it out.
  • I am reading the Mayo Clinics guide. Definitely informative so I am happy I picked that up.

NBR, I am reading the Game of Thrones series =)

  • We are reading The Expectant Father, which was recommended to my husband by a close friend. So far we like it a lot.

No pregnancy books here, but for fun I am reading the Outlander series. On book 3 (Voyager) now. I love these books! They're definitely a commitment and not short reads though!

  • I just started reading the Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy. A coworker gave it to me along with "Your Baby's first year" or something like that, when she knew I was TTC.So far I like it...I read a lot about pregnancy online and I went to nursing school so I like the non-medical perspective.

I also don't love to read, but I did finish the Girl on the Train in about 3 days!

  • No pregnancy books for me for awhile- if at all. My mom is a nurse and the internet gives me all the info I want.

I guess Outlander is a theme here- I'm smack dab in the middle of the second Outlander book, Dragonfly in Amber. It's so good, but so long I need little mini breaks partway through them. I'll be reading The Lake House by Kate Morton hopefully this weekend, then I'll go back to DiA.
  • Oh my word I love the outlander books. I'm on book 6 and even though they're long as all get out they're just fantastic.

I'm reading the Headspace Guide to a Mindful Pregnancy, which has been nice. I've been using the Headspace app for a few months and it's really helped me get through the early pregnancy anxiety. I also just downloaded Expecting Better, which I've heard great things about.

  • I wish I had time to read these days! last time I read for pleasure I was on maternity leave and bfing ds! Now with a 5 month old and working full time I just don't have the time! I do love to read so much! I'll remember the outlander series for when I'm out on the next maternity leave!

It's not that I hate to read, because I actually love to escape my world for a bit to live in an alternate one. But I just don't have the time anymore. My 3 year old keeps me on my toes the minute I walk in the door from my full time job to the minute we fall asleep in her tiny twin bed together. I then drag myself out at 11 just to roll in to my bed..

I do love the stephanie plum series! Crime fighting hilariousness!

As far as baby related, I love the dr sears book of attachment parenting and pretty much all of his books. He is big about being the loving gentle parent which I strive to be.
