Nursing moms, extra sensitive nipples?

I am EBF and we had some latch issues in the beginning which caused serious nipple soreness, but now at three weeks LO is latching great and for the most part my nipples are no longer sore. I've noticed that they are extra sensitive now though. If I am even remotely cold my nipples get super hard and are sore again. Is this lingering soreness from improper latching or do you mamas experience this when you get cold too?

  • I use a nipple shield which has helped a lot! It's a pain to rely on though cause you have to have it everywhere you go and wash it at night and such. My nips hurt when I get cold though, it helped me to wear the thick cloth breast pads.

  • Do they turn white? I have vasospasm and thst is exactly what happens to me. Keeping them warm helps!
  • OMG mine too, I'm still working through latch issues but am super sensitive to cold, and hot showers. I wonder if it's letdown? Also when he cries, or when I first start feeding..
  • Have you looked into raynauds phenomenon? Do your nipples turn white and burn and then return to a normal color? I have raynauds and the vasospasms occur throughout the day. I stopped breastfeeding due to the pain and still have vasospasms regularly anytime I get a little cold.
  • We had family holiday photos taken last weekend at a Christmas tree farm. It was cold and breezy. I was nearly in tears from the pain. I am pretty sure that the cold nipple pain is way worse than the pain I experienced from my c section!!
This is my 4th EBF baby however all my other LOs were born in the spring and I don't recall any nipple pain in the winter so I am hopeful that the sensitivity to the cold won't last forever but I have no idea how long til things return to closer to normal.
