If you have a FSA/HSA check it out!

I was going through my FSA benefits last night (new job & first FSA). I was surprised to see a doula is a covered cost! I have a letter to bring to my midwife for her to fill out for "medical necessity". I'm stoked!
Also, I will probably see if she'll write another letter for massage. They helped tremendously my last 2 pregnancies with my SPD.

  • Holy crap!! You just totally made my life. I just pd the deposit on my Doula and I'm feeling the burn a bit. First check in with her is on Monday, and I'm so so excited.

    Thank you!

  • I just saw this too! Ive been using my FSA for years to cover my massages to help prevent migraines. It's a great benefit. One thing that is annoying is that the max contribution is $2550 and between hospital admission company's, deductible, massages, and other health care expenses, I'm probably going to meet that limit pretty quickly, so even if I was able to get my doula covered by my FSA, I may run out of money in there first!
  • @chloe97 yeh I'm paying OOP completely for my midwife since my insurance will not cover a homebirth. And my limit is $2550 as well. I'll probably use my little tiny but left in my account this year to pay her deposit. Then pay for the doula with the FSA & remainder of it towards the midwife. It's all so ridiculous :(

  • I just had a consultation with two midwives and was surprised to learn that they bill their births as "facility ob care" vs a specific homebirth code. Not sure if this is allowed where you are, but my insurance covers this and they specifically say they don't cover homebirth. Weird right?
  • Hmmm I don't think I would be comfortable with that. I did insurance billing for many years...

  • Can someone let me know where it's outlined that you can use FSA dollars for this? I've looked at the FSA 502 IRS guide and cannot find anything of the sort??
  • I looked specifically at my plan.
