Winter Coats for Newborns?

What do you all plan to do for winter attire for your babies? I live in MN where it's freezing all winter. I already have a thick fleece cover for the car seat, but what do you bundle your baby up in? They're not supposed to wear thick winter coats while in their car seats in the car, right?

Would love suggestions!

Right, they aren't supposed to wear coats.

Try a fleece Columbia bunting suits. They are very thin and can go safely in car seats in my experience. Fleece sweater and lots of layers are a good option.

Just do the strap test to make sure it works for your baby. Buckle baby in the fleece suit, take baby out without adjusting the straps. Buckle baby back in wearing normal clothes. If the straps aren't too loose it's safe.
  • I used whatever outfit DD1 was wearing with a hat, a fuzzy blanket over her, and the warm cover on top of the car seat. If she was going to be out of the car seat or anything like that we had a warm bunting to put her in.

This drove my MIL insane as she was constantly concerned she would catch a terrible cold from being without a jacket. I had to be very firm about it (love my in laws, but like a lot of the older generation they just don't get some of the newer guidelines.) Honesly, a lot of the time in the car I would have to take the blanket off because she got too hot with the heat blasting.

  • I'm also from MN. We have the Eddie Bauer car seat cover which is like a fleece lined sleeping bag. I'm planning to put a hat with ear covers on her head and add an extra blanket under the cover when it's really cold and then unzip the cover in the car so she doesn't get over-heated.
  • @missliz53 - I have that car seat cover too! I wasn't sure if you could leave the cover on when in the car ... do most people just leave it on and unzip it?
  • You want as little between LO and the back of the seat as possible! (And the same goes for toddlers or any age kid in a car seat)

We used a JJ Cole Car seat cover (sorry, it won't let me add a pic) with a blanket underneath for our first and he stayed warm enough. The nice part is that it also came off once you got to your destination to so LO didn't overheat at the grocery store/ mall. My girlfriend had the Bundle Me (the kind that goes under the baby) and her LO would get heat rash from it.
  • We're in Eastern Canada-long, snowy winters here too. With DD1 we used a fleece suit over her clothes and a blanket. I can't carry the bucket seat because of my back, so I just put a blanket over her to carry her to the car. For long walks I wore her in a wrap inside my parka (zipped to her upper back). We plan on doing the same for this baby.

You're right that fluffy coats shouldn't be used in car seats. My 3 yr old has a lighter wool coat to wear in the car, and a snowsuit coat for playing outside.

  • I'm glad someone started this post. I'm in Arizona and clueless about winter! It finally started getting "cold" here last week (lows in the 50s) I'm bringing DS up to Utah to visit my Mom in December and have no idea what to do! I'm sure we'll either be inside or in the car most of the time.
  • Do the car seat covers void warranties and pose a safety risk? I took a 3 hour car seat class and I'm pretty sure the nurse said they shouldn't be used, along with anything else on the seat or under it while in the car. I can't remember for sure tho, it was a long and boring 3 hours. I thought she said no coats like PP said, and to just use a blanket.
  • I bought a jacket called a pram for DS. It's less of a jacket and more of a bunting. It even has slots for the car seat buckles it's fleece and has attached mittens. I have a car seat canopy so I'll put that on with the jacket when it gets colder. Along with a hat for DD head. DS wiggles his hats off so I'm sure that'll come off in the car and I'll probably flip the car seat canopy up so he doesn't over heat.
  • What about for babywearing? My winter jacket doesn't cover the back of the carrier and id rather spend a little on baby than a lot on me. Would a fleece bunting over a regular outfit be overkill? We go on long walks all the time and so far it hasn't been too cold but it's starting to get there.
  • Certain covers are safe, such as the "shower cap" style. JJ cole car seat cover is this style and is safe. Jj cole bundle me is not safe bc it goes between the child and the seat and can interfere with the straps.

I have a warm bunting thing that I out LO in for baby wearing. It goes over her regular outfit and then i put her into the carrier and a hat on her head. She seems very cozy and warm. I also have a hoodie/jacket that has a middle insert to go over baby while wearing. It even has a little hood for the baby. I plan on using it all winter for outdoor activities (within reasonable temperatures.)
  • I am also from MN, I have that jjcole car seat cover that only goes over baby. And I just ordered a car seat canopy that has fleece lining and I'll have baby wear something warm with a thin blanket. We need to get all the MN moms together
