Baby's Gender

How far do you have to be before you can tell the gender of the baby?

Re: Baby's Gender

  • The sex is usually determined during the 20 week scan. However I know many people who found out at the 16 wk scan - if the baby was in a good position to see the penis or vagina. If you are high risk and doing the harmony testing then you will find out around 11 weeks

You will find out the gender of your child when he/she is able to identify male, female, or however the person identifies....its not until later in life.

If baby cooperates at the anatomy scan (which the main point is to be sure baby is healthy, not to find out the sex) at 20 weeks, you can find out then.

If your doctor feels you are high risk, they can run a genetic blood test, and a part of it can determine boy or girl. But that test is a serious test that should not be done just because you want to find out how the baby is going to pee. Its to find out the odds of serious chromosomal issues with baby.
    all of this.
i know finding out the sex of the baby is super exciting, but making sure baby is healthy should be your main concern during all tests/screenings/US's/etc. i personally didnt find out the sex of my LO until 19 weeks at the a/s.
  • Usually you find out at 20weeks. It seems like such a long time though but it's worth the wait. Some can find out sooner but it's easier to tell at 20weeks or later. Hopefully your little one will be in a position to tell when it's time. (:
  • We opted to have CVS testing and were offered the option of being told the sex at 13 weeks. The testing was done at 12w 5d.

Absolutely unnecessary cost and exposure to ultrasound waves to your child. What is approximately 6 more weeks? Its called having patience.
Frankly, there is so little difference between the patience of someone finding out at 14, 16, 18 and those who wait until 20 weeks.

The real women exercising patience are those waiting to know their child's sex until the delivery room.

Flame away, but: It's the "I have to know now" (in general) or "I can't plan until I know the sex of my child, I need to know ASAP!" attitude of this generation. Yes, we have the technology today? Yes, but do we know the long term outcomes of today's technology? No. Hence why it is recommended that ultrasounds and Dopplers be used for medical purposes and it has been advised that "funsie" ultrasounds may not be appropriate. I don't care if you find out the sex If your child, but I side eye those who "need to know ASAP", go to unnecessary scans at unregulated boutiques, and not wait until the medically necessary anatomy scan (though it's not the main purpose of it....it's to find out the health of your child). I loved being team green and wouldn't have changed it for anything in this world.
QFT. I don't see the appeal of shelling out all the money and running around to boutique places to find out a few weeks earlier.

I was told at 16 weeks they could tell us the sex but I declined. I think it is more fun to just not know.

    Team green, FTW!
  • My friend's son was determined to be male at 12 weeks, just through the US!

I'm excited to know at my anatomy scan but I am more concerned that we've got a healthy baby than what parts are between their legs. If they can't make out the relevant bits clearly, so be it. I don't get the people who pay for extra scans at private boutiques solely to find out gender. Maybe it's because of a family history neural tube issues and miscarriages, but assuming the baby is healthy and the only point of the AS is sex is a bit presumptuous.
  • We found out the sex at the AS but I certainly wasnt in a hurry to know. I dont see the point is paying money (here its about $300 for a private scan becuase we dont have 'boutiques' you actually have to go to a medical professional for any scan) and its only a few weeks! Tbh even though scan said girl, one small part of me doesnt trust it anyway so we are going to go team green for No2
