Poops once a week

Ok so I've read everywhere and spoke to my doctor that bf babies can go 10 days without pooping? Because they don't have much to waste. Seriously? My first pooped every day. My 2nd LO is 2 months old. Only went once this week, and is now currently on day 3 of not pooping again. Doctor said I eat too many bad carbs? Could be causing it. My doctor is great but this didn't sound right. I'm a fantastic eater. Vegetables, fruits, yogurt, oatmeal, wheat if i eat bread. I only have crumb cake at night, yes maybe a lot of it but still! LO only pooped a day after I had prune juice because that's what the doctor recommended. He isn't uncomfortable or hard and he pooped soft. Any advice? I changed my dessert diet to see if this is really true or is it that there isn't much waste from my milk? Thank you !

Re: Poops once a week

  • My son will often go several days between pooping. On occasion he will go a couple days in a row, but not often. I haven't changed anything in my diet. If I feel he is uncomfortable then I will do some infant massage to help him. I'm not concerned, only if it became hard or was bloody would I be. He is exclusively BF. Good luck!

  • Thanks. Me drinking prune juice is helping him go. I guess mentally it messes me up. I don't think his uncomfortable. Just thought it was odd with my diet since I am a great eater. I'll try not to stress over it. Thanks
  • Has nothing to do with you eating. My doctor said could be once a week or every day and could change up. It's babies :-)
  • If it was bad carbs then my LO would routinely be constipated for weeks. Don't believe it. Super Nachos on Saturday night and my LO poops like a champ.
  • My little guy is 17 weeks and only poos once a week. He went 9 days once. We gave him 1/2 tsp dark karo syrup as recommended by his doctor and he pooped the next morning. It's just because your milk is made perfectly for your baby so there is not much waste.
  • Thanks ladies! I guess it's a mental thing. He is back again on day 4 no pooping. I guess it's his thing lol. You guys make me feel better!! Thanks again
  • My DD also went through a phase (maybe 2-3 months until about 4 months) of pooping very infrequently.  Like every 5-7 days.  She didn't go more than a week.  I am dairy free, gluten free and don't have a high carb diet.  My diet was similar w/ DS, and he never did this kind of thing.  I was a little concerned, but she seemed happy and the poop always looked normal.  Now she goes every 1-3 days or so at 5.5 months.

  • Probiotics will have him going more frequently. The IBCLC's here like for them to go more and recommend this. They say a week is common but not optimal
