went for a sonogram today, she's measuring 31 weeks (a week ahead) 4.2 pounds and 81st percentile. I've only a gained 3 pounds this pregnancy, but I can't believe how big she is!! Does this seem normal?
I would take this info with a pinch of salt. I was told my baby was going to be 95th percentile and at least 10lbs. She was born on Friday and weighed 7lbs 2oz.
While the size of your baby can be affected by external things (like GD) for the most part it's genetic. I've often been surprised at the really large babies some of my tiniest friends have had (and vice versa). I, for one, have GIANT babies because my husband's family has giant babies (and my family has babies on the larger side of average)...that's just the way it is. I would also second what @mollypuss1 said, I was told mine was already 8 pounds at my 30 week u/s, but when he got here at 36 weeks he was 8 pounds, 4 ounces. So...those measurements aren't always accurate.
At 30 weeks my baby was measuring at the 89th percentile! and then at my last appointment (36 weeks) she is only 64th percentile. So it can slow down and doesn't necessarily mean he/she will continue to grow at that pace. My doctor said she could have just hit a big growth spurt at that point.
No one really knows how big or small your baby will be until he/she is born. During my first pregnancy, my dr and the ultrasound tech told me I was having a small to average size baby. Even after my water broke, my Dr felt around and said I was having a small baby. NOPE. He was 8 11 with broad shoulders that got stuck and tore his way out. I should have known, as my husband and his brother were both over 10 lbs when they were born.
