Against having an NT scan?

Hi Ladies,
I was just curious if there were any other ladies out there who were NOT having an NT scan? My husband and I were scheduled for ours and then decided to cancel it.

My sister in law and brother had theirs and all it did was make them a nervous wreck for more then 10 weeks... Tons of additional appointments, doctors saying the baby needed a blood transfusion, and more. They switched doctors who said everything was perfect with the baby and there was no need to have made them worry.

We are just worried it will do the same thing for us... Make us worried for no reason.

Our last appointments were all perfect! So we are skipping the NT scan and our next appointment will be a Doppler appointment in Decemeber.

Anyone else NOT having the NT scan?

Re: Against having an NT scan?

  • You're not alone. We never had one with DD and aren't having one this pregnancy. It's truly a personal preference.

  • I'm a low risk pregnancy so I opt out of all screening tests. This doesn't mean things cannot go wrong, we just choose not to do the tests. We wait until the Anatomy scan to make sure the baby is doing well.

Basically, this. All I am offered is a dating ultrasound and anatomy scan. Same with blood work. I did all the 2nd tri screening blood work with my first baby but since everything was completely normal and I've had no issues since, my doc felt comfortable not having me do them again. All I'll have to do is blood type and glucose.

  • Though it sounds more like an issue with the doctors, not the test itself, it's definitely your preference on whether to do it or not. We're low risk, but decided to do it anyway, maybe even for our selfishness of wanting to see and confirm there was a baby still doing well in there. Whatever you decide is the right choice for you!

  • I'm considered low risk so I'm only getting a single ultrasound at 20 weeks based on recommendations from my midwife.
  • I decided to get the 10w Verifi blood work done so I am not getting the 12 w NT scan. Although Im sad I won't get to see baby on an US I will know the results 2 weeks sooner.
  • We chose to opt out of any additional testing for our first and did the same this time with our second. I do wish we could have another ultrasound though!
  • We aren't getting any extra scans or tests done for those very reasons. Unnecessary worry from possibly faulty results, and we would keep the baby no matter what. Why do a test if it changes nothing?

  • We aren't doing any extra scans either. I already have anxiety so it would only cause that to heighten and since I'm considered low risk, we don't see the point in doing it.
  • I am 35 so I am AMA and chose not to do genetical testing or the NT scan ( never did anyting for my first two kids either). I am a worry and the weeks waiting for results would make me go crazy and then questioning the results. I am also a person who is better and dealing with things as they happen ( I am an acute care nurse so I am really use to that). I honestly think it is every person's choice.
  • My doctor didn't even bring it up as an option. I never knew it was a normal test to get until this board. I guess she deemed me as low risk so didn't bother bringing it up.

Thanks everyone! Yea... For us, it wouldn't change anything... We would have the baby no matter what the results are. Plus... The God we serve is bigger than any results a doctor could give you anyway! But it's good to know we aren't the only ones who are opting out of all the additional testing! Besides, it would make me a nervous wreck awaiting the results! Thanks for all of your insight! I appreciate the responses!
  • We are definitely not "against" the NT scan and additional testing. We didn't have it done simply because it was not covered by our insurance.

  • *lurking* I agree that this is the mother's choice, but I have to argue a bit about the logic that it wouldn't change the decision to have the baby, so don't do it. It's not only about whether or not you would terminate. It's about being prepared if you would find out something is wrong, e.g. financially, having additional doctors lined up, doing research, etc.
The way I see it is we'll find out if something is wrong at the A/S. I would rather have less time preparing than more time worrying. I'm not against anyone who wants to do it, but those are my reasons.

  • We did the Visibilit test for trisonomy and came out low risk. My doctor didn't say anything to us about a NT scan and we didn't do one, but I read about it on here and freaked a little bit that we didn't have that done. But I guess now that we know we're low risk, I won't try to get it done. Sounds like they're kind of subjective anyways.

  • My doctor didn't bring it up. I wouldn't even know there was such a thing if it wasn't for this board as someone else said. I was going to ask for one thinking it was standard, but after reading about it online, I figured there's probably a reason my doctor didn't bring it up since I don't have any known risk factors.
  • We opted out of all additional testing with my last 2 and this one as well. Not only do I not need the extra stress over it (Cuz that's what I do. Freak out waiting on every test result ever), but our insurance doesn't cover it and since I'm low risk we decided the extra expense and extra blood work ect wasnt for us. I have my usual 1st trimester bloodwork and I'll have 2 one hour glucose tests (huge family history of diabetes), but that'll be it for me. As pps have said, it's really a personal choice. Doing it great, especially if it'll put your mind at ease. But not doing it is fine too. To each their own :)
  • We are doing the NT test and I'm a little freaked out.  Not freaked out about potential test results, but I'm just worried about whether or not baby will have grown like it should have and still have a heart beat, etc.  My anxiety stems from my previous miscarriage.   That is my main concern right now.

  • We've had a hard time trying to decide if we are going to the the blood testing along with the NT scan. We need to decide soon, but are seriously thinking of skipping them. Our Dr's office seems to really push both of them. Nice to see other people opting out of the testing. I am worried all the testing will make me more anxious.

  • We opted out this time. We did last time and had great NT and quad screen results and then discovered an issue at the A/S. We will have our A/S at 18 weeks, so by potentially finding out an issue 6 weeks earlier isn't going to make a difference, IMO. I'm totally not against it for others, but it's not for us.

  • Generally I'm not against it, but we decided not to have it. I can totally understand if some women do it, though. I'm low risk and if they would find out something, it wouldn't change anything for me. Also most of the time when they DO find something the baby ends up being healthy. It would just mean more worry for me, so I don't mind not having one. My doctor is fine with it :)
  • No NT scan for me either. My doctor presented it as an option, but I'm considered low risk, so she said it would be my decision. I will have my A/S between 18-20 weeks and I suppose that's about it as far as screening is considered (outside of things like bloodwork, glucose, urine screens, and doppler checks).

  • I am a worrier, but also a planner... So my decision has been to go forward with the NT. It won't change anything in terms of our decision to bring our child into the world. But I'd rather be well prepared. I just recently had a long judgemental conversation with my sister in law who refuses the screening (5 kids in) and didn't agree with my going along with it. But this is my first child and even though I'm not high risk, I can't see the harm in getting the information. Will it be rough if additional tests are called for? Absolutely, but I'll likely go along as long as there are no risky procedures.

Best wishes to all. I don't think there is a wrong decision here, it's just something that each individual needs to decide.
  • We had our NT scan this past Monday and were given the option to opt out of the blood test after we saw the results of the NT. Well they were normal, so we're opting out of the blood test. I'm glad we did it, because in our case the doctor was able to explain this anti-E antibody I have since my last pregnancy and we're more informed on that front. And we also learned more about the VERIFY test and decided that it's not the best option for us at any point in the pregnancy. I was a bit nervous about the ultrasound and that there would be bad news, but it was all good. So now we have more ultrasound pictures of Baby and some peace of mind.

  • I had mine done today and the Dr. was very pleased with everything. Still did blood work but it made me feel better just seeing and hearing that things looked good after having a subchorionic hematoma.
  • I had mine on Tuesday. It was great to see the little one again and we got to hear the heartbeat for the first time! However, baby wouldn't move into the right position so we have to go back again next week. Apparently our lil one is going to be as stubborn as mommy and daddy. LO was moving like crazy, just not the way we needed it to!
  • I did mine yesterday despite being categorized as low risk & it was a bigger relief than I expected. The scan was great, I'm so glad we got to see the (very active) baby, and if anythings wrong I would rather be prepared than taken by surprise. I definitely get why people opt out but I'm happy we did it.
  • My husband and I Also opt out of the NT scan. I didn't do it with My daughter either. My current OB told me it's up to me but he doesn't recommend unless you are at high risk. He told the test a lot of times is a false and he See's a lot of patients after getting bed news from that text go and have abortions and I couldn't believe it.
  • I also scheduled a NT and then canceled after we decided not to do it! It would have been out of pocket cost for us and because we have no family history and I'm under 30 we decided the risk was very low. I asked a few friends and most of them felt like it was either a waste of money or caused them more stress due to unclear results.

We will have the anatomy scan in 2 weeks so I'm hoping that will leave us confident that we have a healthy baby!
