When are you starting your nursery?

We are finding out what we are having on Saturday and my mom just told us over the weekend that she would like to buy our crib for us as a gift and wants to order it either this weekend or next weekend. This has me thinking, when do people typically start getting the nursery ready? I am 15w2d but have noticed that I am starting to nest. Let's just say that I went to sweep up some dirt on Sunday and ended up spot cleaning the entire house! Ha!

Re: When are you starting your nursery?

  • We're starting to pick things when we find out the sex, but that's not until Christmas time for us. Once we know we'll decide on colors, themes, etc. and then actually get started on the room. I really should get things in there packed up ahead of time though. Not really looking forward to that. :(

  • I needed to get my nursery done asap my last pregnancy after we moved into our new house. I was around 25 weeks and was going nuts because we had just moved. It was hilarious because my child didn't even sleep in her room until she was 9 months old. It was just so much easier to have her in with me.

That being said, it will feel like a huge weight off your shoulders when you're all done and you'll also have a place to put alllllll the baby stuff. I also would just go hang out in there before the baby was born. I'd say I finished around 27-30 weeks.

I have to redo a bedroom in my house for this one because it's all wood paneling and gross. It needs walls and new flooring, but I'm not freaking out because I know he/she will be with me for quite some time. My dilemma is whether to do a new crib set or buy DD a new bedroom set and give hers to the new baby.

It really doesn't matter when you do it, just have fun with it! :)
  • After we find out the sex we'll start thinking about the room. We moved my daughter out of the nursery since it's so small and into the bigger room. The nursery is literally bubblegum pink (what were we thinking!?) so if it's a boy, we'll definitely be repainting it.

  • I won't do a nursery until later this time around because we only have two bedrooms. Baby will room share with us for a while and share dresser/closet space with DS. I have my Pinterest board with ideas ready to go though!

With DS, we started slowly pulling the nursery together after Christmas when I was around 25/26 weeks. It was finished in time for my baby shower at 33 weeks so that we could organize and put things away.

Even though DS didn't end up sleeping in his crib at night until around 7 months, we used the room a lot for playing, quiet time, naps, diaper changes, and general baby storage in the closet (clothes, accessories, diapers, wipes, etc.)
  • We'll probably wait a while just because we're busy, but I kind of want to do a whole bedroom set up re-do. We use our three for master, my office, and basically an extended closet for my husband. But he has an office across the house where it gets really cold, so I was thinking of moving our bedroom into one of the small ones, and using the master as a combined office for us both/occasional guest room. And then making the nursery the third room that's leftover, whichever one that happens to be.

Realizing this isn't that related, but my husband has shown little-to-no enthusiasm about discussing all the possible configurations of our bedrooms so I wanted to let it out :)
  • We're waiting until we know baby's gender and honestly won't do much before the baby shower. My guess is it'll be another four months until we kick it into gear.
  • With our first (and now we have the room) we went pretty neutral. Partly because we knew we wanted more kids and partly because we figured if people wanted to give us things they should feel free to do so whenever, haha.

Ultimately, all the furniture was set up by the time I was about 30 weeks pregnant with Elizabeth but because she slept in our room for 4 months it basically went unused and there honestly wasn't as much of a rush as I felt while pregnant.

We're currently mudding the drywall in the room that's going to be the nursery so I guess you could say we're working on it.

I love neutral colors so I keep going back and forth between light gray and light green or a softer yellow and light gray. We already have the theme picked out and I've already have chosen what to do on the accent wall. Just can't decide on colors!

We also have a crib and a few other things I found couldn't pass up deals on. :)

    Edit: because words are hard.
  • Mostly waiting till December to see if we can find out the sex. My aunt insists on buying the cot and bassinet so I need to get that room sorted out. There won't be a baby shower (a fact that I am really sad about and struggling with) so I don't need to worry about where to put that stuff. Badically there's no need to rush to get anything done but I feel the urge to work on it sooner than later.

Unrelated but as I mentioned my aunt really wants to buy both baby beds and I already have two (sorta expensive) ones picked out. DH and I finally found something we both really love. I feel like I should have found a cheaper one after she told me but I don't want to compromise on what I truely want. After I saw some of the prices of USA cots on another post I started to feel even guiltier. What's the ediquite here?? Do I just stick to my guns or get DH to pick something else with me?
  • @Kurrant I would ask your aunt what her budget is and then go from there! My mom just told us over the weekend that she is buying our crib. I asked her what price range she was looking at and it is SO helpful knowing that when I am looking at cribs.
  • I'm almost 14 weeks and haven't started yet but I would like to start planning/gathering things soon.
We have to use a sunroom/office that is off of the dining room for our twin's room. On one hand I want to wait a while (since we don't have an ideal spot to move the office stuff) but on the other, a twin pregnancy is a whole new ballgame for me. I should probably do things early in case I deliver early, go on bed rest, etc.
Since this nursery will be so 'visable' to the rest of the house it will definitely not be too 'themey'. No teddy bears playing baseball next to our West Elm dining room set.
  • Does anyone have advice on where to shop for great deals on furniture? My Mom and I started my registry at Babies R Us this past weekend, she offered to buy our furniture and found a set that DH, her, and I love, but it's stuff is so expensive there! Was curious as to where we might find similar furniture for a better price. Any help is appreciated!!!

  • We're going to be starting ours in December- mostly because we have to replace the flooring and that's the room all the furniture from the rest of the floor is shoved into right now as we replace THAT flooring. Yay for remodeling craziness- but mostly yay to no more carpet.

We got DS's furniture set from Burlington Baby Depot, same stock as Babies R Us, but cheaper
  • We are hopefully buying a house in the next few months so I have no nursery plans yet. I had no desire to nest with DS so I'm in no hurry. Haha

  • I'm lazy and planning on figuring it out after the holidays. We will probably go buy the furniture in January.
  • I am so stressed about this subject! My mom is living in the room that will be this LO's room. DH is having a MIL suite built down in the basement for my mom and hasn't started on it at all. Granted, DD didn't move into her room until she was 7-8 mos and the only thing I had that I used in her room were her clothes. I started DD's nursery at the beginning of my 2nd tri.

  • Our spare room was a mess - a combination of my home office, my husband's man cave, and my crafting room. So we began clearing that out immediately to start deciding what furniture we needed for the rest of the house to store what we had just pulled out of there.

Then I bought a crib at around 13w. That was probably unnecessary, but it was symbolic for me, saying "I believe this pregnancy will last the entire way" after a previous MC. The rest thus far has all been Pinterest-planning.
  • We've already bought a few items, but they aren't put together. We've had the room prettying cleared out for a while, even before TTC, as we knew that's what we would use it for in the future. As far as decorating, we're waiting to find out the sex.

  • We started "planning" our nursery before we got pregnant! We picked yellows and grays since it works for both boys and girls. And once we find out what we are having... We will add teal for boy or pink for girl! My mom and dad want to buy us our crib too... We just haven't given them the "go" yet! We are twelve weeks this week... But have already bought some blankets, diapers, etc! So I say... Do it whenever it feels right for you!
  • We tore the wallpaper from the previous owners down (that we'd been neglecting for YEARS!) and painted a light beige a few months before we knew we were PG (but were TTC) because 1) we're trying to sell and 2) we knew if it didn't sell quickly it'd eventually turn into a nursery.  That's all we've done and will probably do until January or February when I finally figure out what to do with the crap that's currently in there and move the crib/dresser from storage at my dad's house to our house.
  • Since #2 will be sharing with #1... we are just doing some basic things to make it easy for room sharing. We recently updated the room to a more gender neutral theme before we even decided on #2!
#1 is a girl. #2 is a boy... so...that complicates it just a bit. It will work out.

We already have most of our furniture (still want a rocking chair, though) but the future nursery is still an office/the cat's room. I'm 16+1 today. I think we'll start slowly clearing out the room next weekend. I'd like to get as far as we can during second tri while I'm still feel good/am very mobile. Definitely want things finished before 8 months, in case baby decides to show up early.

We're probably not going to find out the sex and we've already decided on a forest-themed room. It's going to be green with trees and white curtains with leaves on them. I've already started making felt woodland creatures for a mobile to go above the crib. This thread actually has me really excited about it again!
