Bleeding early but continue to healthy pregnancy?

Yesterday evening I was making some food in the kitchen when I felt myself with a flow of bleeding (felt like a heavy period) I rushed to the toilet and sure enough I was bleeding a lot, I put a pad in and laid on my back to try and slow it down. My boyfriend rushed home from work and took me to A&E, they told me to come back early the next morning to the early pregnancy unit for a scan. I went for my scan and everything was great, we saw the baby's heartbeat and even got a picture of our little baby, she said the sizing is all spot on and everything looks good. Obviously I feel so much relief but I still have this niggling feeling in the back of my mind that there's still time for something to go wrong!
Has anyone experienced bleeding in the first trimester and continued onto a healthy pregnancy?
I think I just need some positive reassurance.. Sorry for the rant :)
By the way I'm 10 weeks and 4 days and wasn't due my first scan until the 17th of November originally...

Re: Bleeding early but continue to healthy pregnancy?

  • Yep. I've had this with both my son (at week 13)and my current pregnancy (at week 11). Both times it was a sub chorionic hemorrhage that bled, then cleared out. No harm to the baby or pregnancy in general either time. It completely freaked me out when it happened with my son because I had no idea you could bleed that much without a miscarriage. Each time, my doctor suggested a few days of essentially bed rest and a few weeks of pelvic rest. Expect some brown spotting for a little while after that kind of bleeding too. I'm glad everything looked good on your scan; I know what a relief that is! Don't feel doomed. Although this sort of bleeding is not commonly talked about, it's actually fairly common.

  • Yes I think that's what worried me most, I've read a lot of forums and articles online about bleeding during pregnancy and not many positive outcomes which obviously scared the hell out of me! I'm just worried now that my job may be too much for me during my pregnancy, I work 60 hours a week and on my feet all day in a hot kitchen. I feel exhausted constantly, even after two days off :(
  • At 7 weeks, i was laying in bed and thought I had to pee. I got up and blood was flowing down my leg. My husband and I rushed to ER. They did a ultrasound and we heard heartbeat but that Doctor told me I was threaten a miscarriages and baby was close to my cervix and nothing I can do about it. I went to my doctor the next day after having another bleeding scare that morning and this time I felt a lump of blood come out as I used the bathroom and he did another ultrasound and say baby looked fine, no blood around the baby and It could be the lining of my uterus still soft cause I got pregnant soon after the removal of my birth control or blood clots from the birth control but wanted me to be on bed rest for a week just in case. Needless to say I'm 14 weeks now and everything looking great and I'm going for my visits every 4 weeks instead of every week. Just be cautious and take an easy. But never hesitate to go to the doctor if you think anything wrong. Only you know your body
  • I'm so happy everything is ok for you! I know how scary it can be when it first happens because you have no idea what is going on. Was the biggest relief of my life to see our baby's little heartbeat today. I wish you a happy pregnancy and a healthy baby. I'm so excited to meet our little one :) thanks for your reply
  • Same thing happened to me! Bleeding at 7 weeks and 11 now I m going on 13 weeks. They said at 7 weeks had bleed at 12 week scan didn't show up. Praying for healthy pregnancy for us! It's so scary!!
  • I also have a subchorionic bleed that is .5 inches. My doctor said it presents in approximately 50% of pregnant women and is usually fine. He told me I should not worry at all so I'm going with that!
  • Lurking from April...I had one at 13 weeks that shortened and funneled my cervix and put me on bed rest. ER doc said "this could go either way." I now have a happy healthy almost 2 year old. :)
  • I've had spotting/ occasional light bleeding off and on this whole pregnancy. Mine is also most likely due to the subchorionic hematoma they saw on my ultrasound at 8 weeks. It still makes me nervous all the time, but my doctor told me not to worry unless the bleeding gets a lot heavier with severe cramping. Also said it was relatively common. It hasn't gotten worse and I am 10+3 weeks. Just a bit stressful and I live with pantyliners. Dying to go to my next scan at 13 weeks and see LO again!
  • Phew! Thank you all for responding.
Such a relief to hear I'm not the only one and that it isn't a huge concern to worry myself about. Yes I'm finding now that I just have to wear pantyliners because the bleeding hasn't completely stopped, it's just slowed down a lot. I am thinking of changing my job or cutting back my hours. I'm contracted to do at least two doubles a week which is 9am until midnight and it's just way too much now. I can't ever seem to get enough sleep or rest! Just worried about not getting as much money coming in.
  • I also had a subchorionic hematoma at 6 weeks. It was really scary and we thought we had lost the baby because of the amount of blood that I had lost. An u/s confirmed that everything was fine and a few weeks later we heard the heartbeat which was very reassuring. That being said my dr. said that the pregnancy could still go either way and that I need to take it easy. I've been doing good for the last few weeks but I started s
  • Spotting again today at 11+2 weeks. I'm feeling pretty anxious again and hoping everything will turn out for the best in the end.
  • My sister had that happens few times & everything ultimately ended up fine! She did have bed rest toward the end but not for bleeding. Hang in there!
  • It's called a "threatened miscarriage". Of course, your body will do what it will do ultimately, but you can:
    - Get plenty of bed rest with your feet elevated
    - Hydrate
    - Take folic acid on top of your regular prenatals
Keep us posted, wishing you and your baby the best.
