FTM with multiples- no clue what to expect?!

As the subject says, I am a FTM with twins (tomorrow I'll be 7w). I was receiving fertility treatment so I've been fortunate to have ultrasounds every week, and last week I got to see 2 heartbeats. It's all very surreal- to go from fearing I may never get pregnant to now being pregnant with twins.

Is anyone else pregnant with multiples (or have been before)? I would love advice on what to expect in terms of symptoms (will it really be double in terms of severity), how quickly you showed, whether you delivered early, etc. Truly any words of advice or encouragment would be appreciated!
I would love to meet other moms or mommies-to-be of multiples since I'm sure my fears and concerns are only just beginning :)

Experienced twin mom here. :). My twins will be two next month, and first congratulations. You are in for an exciting, challenging, and amazing ride. Expect more monitoring than normal, and I'd request being seen by a perinatologist regularly. I would also do your research on the NICU levels for hospitals in your area. While many twins moms carry to term, remember that many do not. My boys were delivered ar 36+6, due to the fact they were sharing a placenta. One came home with me, one did five days in the NICU. Look for a hospital equipped for micropremies, just to be extra safe. And last know that you CAN and WILL do this just fine. You were chosen for these little blessings, and you will find a way to do it right.

  • I'm so glad your posted this!! I found out last week that I'm having multiples and I'm scared to death!!! I have a 15 month old, but I still don't know what I'm in for!! Just take it day by day!
  • Thx @theatremandy! My first obgyn is in 3 weeks and I'll ask about seeing a perinatal specialist. Thankfully the hospital I would deliver at has a superior NICU. Did you find that your symptoms in the first trimester were worse with twins? When did u start showing?

@jaceyannie how far along are you? How are you feeling?
  • I am 7 weeks today.   The nausea has hit with vengeance!!  I had a really easy pregnancy with my first, so far the symptoms have been a lot worse!  We went in last week and saw three heartbeats!  But one was growing a lot slower, so the doctor didn't think it would make it.  We go back today to see if we are having two or three babies.  Even as I write that, I can't believe it!!  Like you said, it's just so surreal.  I'm so scared about so many things - the pregnancy, the delivery, the cost of daycare...!

    How are you feeling?

  • I am expecting twins, 8 wks 1 day. I have a 2 year old already but this is my first multiple pregnancy. I met with my doctor today and was told I wouldn't be allowed to go past 38 wks. I would be delivering in an operating room whether I give birth naturally or a c-section and she said extra ultrasounds in the third trimester. She also said to expect more cramping than my first pregnancy, which I've definitely had. Csection chances are 50/50 with twins. My nausea has been horrible since 6 weeks, all day and through the night. And total exhaustion, total. This is a lot harder than my last pregnancy, good thing is it will be shorter! My first was born at 41 wks 5 days!

Very excited to be on this journey with all of you! We should do weekly check ins on multiples!

Also, I am so stressed with this pregnancy because I am so worried I am going to lose one. Silly I know, what will happen will happen but I can't help worrying every time I feel less nauseous or less tired. I just hope they are both healthy. :)

I'd love to do a weekly check in on multiplies!!  That's such a great idea!!

  • We're having mono-di twins, 9w5d today.  First meeting with our MFM (maternal fetal medicine) doctor tomorrow.  I picked up "When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets, or Quads" by Dr. Barbara Luke, and I was very helpful.

My morning sickness kicked in the day before we found out it was twins (5w3d) and has been going strong since.  I started taking Diclegis last week, and I love it.  Besides making me sleepy, it has been a God send.

This is our 6th pregnancy, our first five all stopped growing between 6 weeks and 10.5 weeks, for unexplained reasons, though I'm convinced it is because I'm homozygous for MTHFR mutation.  So this time in addition to taking a butt load of folate and B12, I am also on 2x daily heparin injections, and baby aspirin.  The babies look great at each ultrasound, so if we get through the next week or so, I will feel so much better.

I was just curious, what are mono-di twins? I'm so excited there are a few moms having multiples on here!!

Mono di is short hand for monochorionic, diamnionic. monochorionic means one egg that split, and one placenta. Diamnionic means they each have their own amniotic sack. So basically identical twins that share one placenta but have their own bag. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monochorionic_twins

You can have Di di, mono di, or mono mono. :p

We found out we were having twins last week. It's very exciting but scary at the same time. We were just going in for a first routine us and bam, twins. I am 7wks 5 days. My morning sickness kicked in at 5 1/2 wks, way stronger then my 2 year old s/s were.
  • Sorry-late reply here. My twins were the same as stringgirl's. They were mono-di. My nausea was annoying but honestly not any worse than this time. My doc told me it was due to the fact that I was building one placenta, not two. Di-di mamas usually have worse morning sickness.

One thing I was told, which is in Dr. Luke's book, is eat lots of protein. Those babies will wipe you out, and get ready to be HUNGRY in about 2 months! Protein also decreases your chances of contracting. (I have no idea why, but my doc agreed with this.). Weight gain is very important with multiples, so don't worry about the scale. I dropped 35 lbs in a month nursing twins.

Being hungry for protein and also having the thought of eating it or anything making you sick.... these babies are making me a crazy woman.  Mmmm meat bleh meat.  O_o

  • I'm 9w5d with twins!!! Started having ms at 5 1/2 wks and finally has faded out. My appetite is still horrible but I'm trying to eat better. Rather than the toast, crackers that I was only eating before. Last week I went to my first MFM appt, everything looked good but she had me start with a baby aspirin once a day. Since there is more of a chance of preeclampsia and I also read it's preventative for miscarriage with multiples. It is definitely a lot scarier with multiples since there are more complications but it is truly amazing that we are growing more than one baby inside us. Not many people can say they did that
  • Currently waiting for ultrasound at perinatalogist to confirm twins. My bloodwork came back high & my last ultrasound they *think* there was another baby but couldn't get a good view of the "second structure " as they call it. So that was 8 weeks. Im 10 weeks now & see perinatalogist at 11 weeks!! Hopefully they see both ❤️
I have 2 other children but this would be first time with twins.
