Breastfeeding

Stopping Breastfeeding

Hi, I have been breastfeeding for 10 months and am trying to stop but every time I I even slightly reduce the amount I pump or nurse I get clogged ducts. What am I supposed to do? I asked my doctor who was of zero help saying that I need to pump out the clogs (no crap!) but how am I supposed to stop if I can never reduce? I'm getting frustrated enough to say screw it, I'll get the mastitis (again) and resort to a breast surgeon if I have to. Just no idea what else to do. Even using Sudafed and sage tea but it's probably just going to come back as soon as I stop.

Re: Stopping Breastfeeding

  • I would contact a LC, would be more helpful than a doctor in this area.

  • Have you tried pumping just decrease the amount of time and intensity? Just an idea
  • My doctor told me to just stop pumping and see what happens because I don't experience any pain with the clogs. I'm kinda hesitant because I also didn't have any pain with either of my past two mastitis infections (I had a high fever, nausea, vomiting, chills, and cherry boob but no pain). I'm going to run with it because I'm so frustrated anyway but it rings of risky. I get the strong feeling that she doesn't entirely know what to do. Going to talk to a lactation consultant on Wednesday, I think.
  • You will need to continue to pump but only enough to reduce engorgement. If you just pump a little and leave your breasts on the full side then it will signal your body that  it does not have to continue to produce more milk. I have heard it can take over a month of this process before your body gets the message. Its a process of patience. I would try using zyrtec, that is also supposed to dry you up. Cabbage leaves is an old method but i've heard it works.
  • Just stop pumping? And you have already had mastitis? I don't think med school curriculum has much on lactation management. Talk to a LC, BFing should never abruptly stop.
  • Doesn't mint reduce milk production? If so, try drinking mint tea
