Gagging/choking

Ever since baby was born he has gagged after feedings sometimes 1-2hrs after and when sleeping. Anyone have any ideas? Or had this happen? He spits up randomly but not so much and gets hiccups alot

Re: Gagging/choking

  • Try holding him up 30 minutes after eating and talk to your pediatrician about elevating one end of mattress. It sounds like acid reflux. That causes hiccups too.

  • Same boat with my LO! I mentioned the spit up during previously doctor appointments and they didn't seem to care or recommend anything. Interested to see what others recommend!
  • My pediatrician said this is normal for the first month until their diaphragm strengthens. If reflux persists after a month or if she's not gaining weight they prescribe something for it :)
  • My DD does this as well. She has 'disorganized eating". She has torticollis which can affect the suck, swallow, breathe function. So she frequently will choke, even when she is sitting up straight while eating and the bottle is practically level. She does this when she nurses as well. She will also try to suck down the whole bottle when we bottle feed, so we have started bottle pacing (you can find YouTube videos that teach how to do this) and we have started burping by holding her neck and chin and moving her body around in a circle (someone posted a video on this forum that showed it) and it has done wonders to stop the spotting up!
  • My LO did this even while still in the hospital. I was told its mucous or amniotic fluid and that babies have such a sensitive gag reflex that anything at the back of the throat will cause them to do this. He still does it but not as frequently. He's 3 weeks. It still freaks me out!
