Snacks for hospital bag

I am going with a midwife and am allowed to eat and drink during labor. Was wondering what snacks you gals are planning to pack in your hospital bag

  • I am also thinking granola bars, fruit snacks, etc. I brought Ritz crackers with PB last time - the ones in individual packages.

  • That's awesome you can snack during labor. You'll want items that give you lots of energy without weighing you down/upsetting your stomach (be prepared, some women vomit their way through the transitional and pushing part of labor - I puked my guts out with baby #1).

With #2, we packed a jar of peanut butter for me to eat spoonfuls of when I got tired and needed an energy boost. Trail mix or nuts are also good energy food. I craved apples but was at a hospital where we were not supposed to eat or drink and couldn't figure out a way to sneak an apple in my mouth.

And before people start losing their minds: yes, I know they don't like you eating at the hospital because of the risk of aspiration if you need surgical interventions and no, I do not advise people to go against medical advice and sneak snacks.
  • My birthing center allows clear fluids. That was fine with me as all I wanted with DS during that time was jello. Little cups of jiggly goodness. I've heard of some women packing Gatorade and lemon drops or even preggo drops. One I heard had her husband get her an Italian ice.

I can see the ice helping. Sucking on ice cubes has helped with some late pregnancy nausea I've been having. My hospital allows light snacking if the woman can tolerate it.
I'll add peanut butter and crackers to the list. I love peanut butter.
  • While I won't be allowed to eat any of this during labor, I have asked my mother to take on the job of picking up snacks on her way to the hospital for herself and SO. On my list is fruit like apples and grapes, granola bars, peanut butter and/or cheese crackers. I will probably also ask her to get some variety bags of candy.
However I've only picked these items because that's what they like to snack on and won't need refrigeration.
In your situation if find out if you'll have access to a fridge when making your final snack decisions.
  • Snacks aren't only for during labor, either. I didn't eat anything during labor, but I stayed at the hospital for three nights, including the night my labor was induced, and the snacks came in handy between meal times. Our hospital does not have a cafeteria. I'm not even sure they have vending machines.

  • My midwife is allowing me to eat as well and I have access to a fridge and freezer! I made up a quick list of things for myself, my SO, and both my Mother and Grandmother will also be there.

    Popsicles(for me)
    Jello and Pudding(Again for me)
    Cheese and crackers
    Peanut butter and cracjers
    Chips for SO
And assorted candy, jolly ranchers for me if I can't handle anything but ice water so it can flavor the water.
  • I'm allowed to eat at least up until the epidural. I haven't shopped for snacks yet but I will be packing the gatorade alternative I use when I run long distances. I use Cliff brand (I get hives from the yellow #5 dye in most gatorade/powerade colors, Cliff is naturally colored but otherwise about the same). It is also a clear liquid so I'll have the option to use it even if they start to restrict regular snacks.
  • Making coconut water Popsicles is good for getting some electrolytes if not hungry
  • Coconut water popsicles sound amazing although I wouldn't want to lug around a little cooler! I have found oatmeal energy bites and other energizing snacks (thanks pinterest) that I'll try to make!
  • I packed a snack bag for myself and DH. We have jello cups, beef jerky, pop tarts, pringles, Gatorade, energy drinks (for hubby), chocolate pudding cups, granola bars and a few other small things. I just went to a dollar store and picked all of these things up. It's so much cheaper than using a vending machine! Also, all of these are for after the baby has arrived and not for during labor.
  • @ammnam14 Usually they have a fridge and freezer at the hospital you can put them in :)
  • The only thing I know I can always eat is Habitant brand vegetable soup, thankfully I can heat it in the kitchenette in the hospital and they allow eating.

I saw half-pound Reese peanut butter cups in the Christmas section the other day. I'm buying one to surprise my husband with in his "snack bag" with all his Oreos, chips etc.
  • I was advised that snacks for during labor should be more protein based snacks as opposed to carb based. Cheese, peanut butter, protein bars. Avoid high carb because they can actually lead to crashes faster.
  • I find it so surprising that some of you ladies get to eat DURING labor. I'm a STM and remember during my first labor (vaginal w/ epi) I was lucky to even get ice chips. Mostly though, I'm just jealous!! :p
  • We have a nourishment room with fridge stuffed with food in my hospital. Some of my favorites were cheese sticks and chocolate milk. There was also a mini fridge in my room. If you you will have access to a fridge and remember to grab your refrigerated items I might bring those, a bubbly drink (I like the natural clear sodas), and other pritien rich snacks for after the baby is born.
  • I remember up until pushing time I was hooked on the hospital's pineapple popsicles. I thought it would be difficult to take some in myself and was so happy when I found out that they had popsicles.
  • I don't remember wanting to eat during labor. I wanted to sleep. I had snacks for the rest of our hospital stay.

Cheese sticks is a great idea. I was struggling to think of protein rich snacks I would want to eat.

  • I'm a STM and they wouldn't let me eat when I was induced the first time. This time - they say generally clear liquids and ice chips but if you get really hungry they may ok smaller items like crackers, etc. they can always give fluids thru the IV but if I start to get sick due to hunger I'll ask for a snack - I don't remember wanting to eat much last time. I wish the IV wasn't mandatory - hate those things
  • I was thinking granola bars, cheese sticks, peanut butter crackers, trail mix, Crunch bar to satisfy my chocolate cravings, and potato chips. ;)

  • I will be at a birthing center, with a full kitchen & fridge! I have frozen smoothie packs ready to go - frozen fruits, frozen yogurt cubes, & greens. I hate peanut butter but its so highly recommended I'm bringing it along, I could disguise it in a smoothie perhaps. Cheese cubes, pretzels, milk & whatever else I think of in the time being.

I wanted to add that I've also heard of some women packing electrolyte cubes to snack on if they feel they're needed. *Even freeze an electrolyte drink in small cubes or a slush.

lurking from Jan '16. Have you tried other nut butters? I usually love peanut butter but have had issues with the taste since becoming pregnant and have been eating almond butter instead. Love it. Trader Joe's had a decent price on several different kinds of nut butters if you want to try something other than peanut.
