Baby refusing bottle all of a sudden

My baby is 6 weeks old now and suddenly decided to refuse a bottle! I have breastfed the entire time however there have been days my husband will give her a bottle with pumped milk and she spent two nights at grandmas while I was away and took the bottle no problem. The past 2 days she has screamed bloody murder and refused... We have tried me leaving the room and a couple different types of bottles. Any advice? I have work coming up so this is scaring me a little as I'm not going to be able to breastfeed her...

Re: Baby refusing bottle all of a sudden

  • This happened with our baby too. He is 7 weeks and refused (I mean absolutely refused, screamed if the bottle even came near his lips) at about 5.5 weeks. I had a meltdown and cried and cried. A week later, was back to taking bottles. I blame it on the 6 week growth spurt. I think something threw him off.
We only gave him a bottle occasionally but after that stint of refusing the bottle we try to give him a bottle every day or two to make sure he remembers how to do it :)

  • same problem here - my baby was taking 1 bottle a day most of the time to get her used to it since I am going back to work - at 6 weeks, she stopped taking it - we tried different bottles, me leaving the room, etc and nothing. At 8 weeks, I decided to try again with a Lansinoh bottle that was given to me. It has a silicone nipple, very soft, and I gave it to her while breastfeeding (first some breast, then burp, then bottle, then back on the breast) since I read that could get her used to it little by little as she starts to associate the bottle with the feeding process. She did not cry that day although she did not drink much from it, she played with it. Next day, she drank 1oz from it. Today (day 3) she drank 2.5 oz from it. Each day she takes more from the bottle, and I am hoping to have a full feed before going back to work. That is what has worked for me.
  • Alright thank you! I'm willing to try anything at this point :)
  • I just had this exact problem. DD started fighting the bottle at about 5.5 weeks. By 6 she completely refused it. I tried everything..different bottles, positions, having others feed her, leaving the house while they tried and nothing worked. She turned 7 weeks yesterday and as usual we tried the daily bottle and she took it! I have no idea what changed but she's taken 5 bottles since then with no problem. We were using Dr Browns prior to refusal and now we are using Mam. Good luck! I know how frustrating it is :(
