Waking up numerous times

I wake up numerous times in the night and I have no idea why. I try to get back to sleep but i struggle to get comfortable. Tonight I am sooo hungry and I've eaten loads but I just can't seem to shift the hunger pangs. What does everyone do for a peaceful nights sleep?

Re: Waking up numerous times

  • Me too, sigh.

Lately, my best coping tools have been benadryl (thanks to recent rains and warm temps, my allergies are INSANE), ear plugs, and a white noise app set on "clothes dryer." I need the earplugs AND the app because the ear plugs don't completely block out the sound of my 6'4" DH's snoring on the next pillow. ;)

But tonight I've been up for an hour because I woke up hungry... Hurray for PB&J on homemade bread! But I'd kill for some warm carbs from the drive-thru... Any drive-thru. Sigh.

  • Nothing. I do nothing. It is a lost cause. I toss and turn until I get in a comfy position and hope for the best. Some nights its only once or twice, but more often than not its 5-6x per night at least. I've contemplating started writing on the mirror in eyeliner every time I'm awake so DH gets some idea of how crappy a nights sleep I'm getting and stops teasing me for going to be an hour after DD. Or maybe wearing his smart watch with a sleep tracker, because that man sleeps like a log and I could just punch him.

  • I used to be a stomach sleeper and that's the only way I could sleep. Neither side agrees with me on a full night's sleep so I'm constantly waking up to turn over.

  • I don't. I take benadryl, but I still wake up every 2 or 3 hours. I get up, pee, sip of water, rearrange the pillows, close eyes and hope for the best! It freaked me out at first, but I try to tell myself that at least I'll be used to it when LO is waking me up every couple hours...
  • @rebelone I used to be a back sleeper. Sleeping on my side sucks.

Benadryl actually makes you need to pee more. When I stopped taking it a noticed a big difference.

Oh, boo, really? I take it to help calm my psoriasis itching. :(
  • I've been waking up several times a night on my back. I fall asleep on my left side, but I can't seem to stay there. I'm even using a snoogle to try to keep me from rolling over, but I'm still finding a way to end up on my back. And of course, I wake up to pee at least once a night.
  • I've always been a light sleeper, but now...it's a lost cause.  DH turns over, I'm awake, the dog scratches, I'm up, after 14 days of rain Sunday night the ceiling in our bedroom began to leak---no sleep at all that night! Even taking Diclegis at night, I am still waking up.  I try to read, but it's too dark to read without a light, and too bright to read on the tablet, so now I just pull up netflix, pop in my earbuds, and end up waking myself up later by dropping the tablet on my face.

I like the mirror marking idea @iamrachellea!  Dry erase markers instead of eye liner for me though.  DH can't figure out why I am falling asleep at 6pm but swears every time he wakes up at night, I am sawing logs.  HA

  • I'm sorry we are all sleeping miserably but misery loves company! I'm at least glad to hear I'm not a freak.

I was a stomach sleeper also and just can't seem to get too comfy in any position so I change around a lot. I am down to one pee break in the middle of the night but it takes me FOREVER to fall back asleep. And with all the moving around, I just never feel rested.

This morning I woke up finally feeling a bit rested and like I had a better sleep only for DH to tell me he had slept all of 3 hours (he usually is just fine) because I was snoring up a storm. Sigh. Can't win.
  • I wake up at least 4-5 times a night. And then since I'm awake I feel like I should pee. It's an awful awful cycle.

Also, I have never hated my queen sized bed more. I wish our master bedroom could fit a king sized bed. :(
  • I had this problem too. This is what worked for me:

Try eating something before bed that won't digest immediately, so you won't wake up hungry in an hour. I usually have half a bagel, or cereal (not the sugary kind though)

Eat something that makes you sleepy - like turkey. This works wonders for me.

Do you take your vitamins at night? Once i started doing that, I slept better. Bonus: It could help with reducing morning nausea.

Try to limit the liquids if possible, too.

Also, maybe you need your bedroom to be a little cooler at night. I turn into a furnace at night, and getting too overheated wakes me up.

    Good luck!

Is there another allergy medicine you can take? Maybe take it in the morning instead?

  • I sleep much better on days that I have exercised.  Swimming laps, in particular, for 15-20 minutes really keeps me knocked out at night.

  • No solutions, but I feel you guys. I feel like I'm awake every hour or so every night. It's not for any particular reason, either. I don't have to pee, I'm not notably uncomfortable, I'm not hungry. I'm just suddenly wide awake.  And even when I'm not awake, I don't feel like I'm deeply asleep, either. I've never been a great sleeper, and chronic sleep deprivation is kind of my jam, but this is a whole new world even for me.  The only upside is I'm now regularly able to fall asleep before 1AM (I've been on a 2-3AM to 10-11AM cycle since I was a little kid). Too bad it's not actually translating to more sleep.
  • I'm a stomach sleeper but haven't been able to sleep on my stomach for about a month now. Sleeping on either side no matter how many or what kind of pillow still causes me pain so I was constantly rolling over and moving. It was waking me every hour or so and keeping DH from getting a good nights sleep. I gave up on sleeping in bed last week and resorted to sleeping in a recliner. Now I only wake up once every night to use the bathroom and DH and I are getting a solid 6-8 hours every night. I guess I will be spending the remainder of my pregnancy sleeping in our living room but that's a small price to pay for 8 glorious hours of rest. Good luck to all of you other ladies. I hope you all find something that works for you.
  • Between this pregnancy insomnia and working night shift (6p-6a even if it is only 2 nights a week) I've been having a bear of a time. I finally figured out what works best for me is to just stay up late, midnight/2am, and eat a decent amount of food including some protein, usually cold cerial or yogurt and toast with peanut butter, right before I go to bed. Then I usually can sleep in until about 10am. (I know this would never work for those of you that have to get up early, you have my sympathies)

If i try to go to bed when DH does (10pm) i always end up waking up about midnight or 1 am and then have to pee and eat, and end up laying awake in bed until about 530 am, when DH gets up to get ready for work. I have the kindle app on my phone and usually end up just reading for those 5 hours.

I don't know...I tried Claritin before, and it just made me really dehydrated and anxious. I'm wary of trying a daytime one again, it was very unpleasant.
  • Also, with DS I ordered a body pillow around 20 weeks and it was worth every penny. I got it from bumpnest.com but found a coupon to use when I ordered it. It really helped my discomfort level.
  • @rebelone I used to be a back sleeper. Sleeping on my side sucks.

    Same
  • DH has decided that despite my growing midsection, I need less and less of the bed. Woke up this morning and almost fell off the bed because he was lying so far over on my side. Ugh!

This! Except exchange DH for my weenie dogs. They are almost never allowed on the bed anymore.
  • I'm restless at night, and kept waking up on my back with a numb right leg from hip to knee :( I got a snoogle and that has helped immensely!! I still get up around 3 or 4 times per night to pee or just stretch because sometimes laying down is really uncomfortable for my back.

  • My doctors say if you can sleep on the left, that's preferable but if it's not comfortable it's much more important to get a good nights sleep on your back/right. Plus you move around anyway during the night.
I've done a fair bit of research myself too - read the actual studies conducted around sleeping positions, counter studies etc.

I find I wake up around 4-5am most nights because my mind is so active/have really actove and bizarre dreams and am then unable to get back to sleep. It's SO frustrating!
  • So glad to hear I'm not the only one!

Room darkening shades, infused essential oils (lavender and others), a cooler temperature, and a snoogle are helping. But, I just got the snoogle and am adjusting to it. I have actually been propping myself up on my back, which works for half the night. Then it cramps my back a bit and I have to switch to a position on my side. Just have to figure out how to do that with the snoogle without waking up the hubs... :)
  • I have naturally curly hair so I usually shower in the morning, but last week I started showering at night before I go to sleep. It works wonders! I have crappy hair in the morning, but I sleep so hard I only have to go pee once in the middle of the night. (It had been every couple hours.) I don't toss and turn as much either. I also have the window cracked open (even though it gets down to upper 30's) and have a pillow in my back and front.
I don't know if any of that will help, but it's the only thing for me so I don't have to resort to medication.

Same here, except for me, I'm usually a back sleeper (also a forbidden sleep position). My hips kill me in the night, I'm constantly flipping over all night from side to side.

  • The last good sleep (7 hours straight) I had was 2 years ago when I was 16 weeks pregnant with my son. Last night he woke me up 3x. I peed 4x and was woken 1x by my husbands snoring. I'm never going to feel rested ever again.

@Mailmans Baby Momma this is me too!

Same. Don't turn on the light and close my eyes while I'm sitting on the toilet and try not to let myself think about anything or else it's all over.

ETA: Im also a stomach sleeper so that has really affected me too. I use that sleepy/relaxing lotion from bath and body works before bed and I have noticed I sleep better nights when I use it than when I don't.

  • Typically I get up to pee 1-2 times a night.  Sometimes I just go into the spare bedroom after the 2nd time and I find I sleep better the rest of the night-- I think I'm sleeping much lighter than normal so every time DH moves he wakes me...  If you're really desperate and have that option it might be a good one to try (or a couch-- I actually find my firm couch and spare room mattress are more comfortable than my tempurpedic).  I love to snuggle but mama's gotta get some rest (and so does DH for that matter)...
