Only desiring things I can't have

My appetite is completely non-existent. Getting no where near 1200 calories a day food is my enemy. I am in my hotel and I am supposed to be ordering dinner and I only want to eat things that I can't have...smoked salmon or fish and chips are the only items on the menu that don't make me gag. I had the fish and chips last night and realized that I don't know what type of fish it was... Seafood was the primary staple of my diet pre-pregnancy but after a scare this morning I promised God that I would do everything right and take zero chances going forward.... Any of you crave all the wrong things? What do you do?

  • Oh yes...I know that fish in moderation is fine normally. I read on WebMD that smoked fish is a no though. I also forgot to mention that I am currently in Shanghai so things that I would eat in the states may not be the best choice here. I don't have the same immune system as the people here, so I don't want to put my peanut at risk.

@bprowess that has to be tough to have to travel out of the country right now. The smells alone would drive me nuts. I agree with PP that what you're craving is fine in moderation. If you can get to a grocery or convenience store, maybe grab some snacks to get your caloric intake up.

I have been craving sushi, which sucks. Last night I had a dream that I won a free meal at the nicest sushi place in our city and had to decline. Lol.

  • I miss sushi too.  I know that plenty of places say it is safe from a reputable place, but it just takes one bad piece.  And since it is something I can avoid, I do.

When I crave sushi, I just go for a shrimp tempura or something.  Oh gosh I want sushi.  I want a big hunk of raw tuna that I can gnaw on.

Raw fish is really the only way I like it.  Unless it is an amazing piece of freshly caught walleye or freshly caught and crusted Halibut.

I'm dying for sushi too. I'm honestly gonna say f*** it and just do it. I'll try and get like California rolls or some one the ones that they cook but if I really want that salmon roll piece, I'm gonna do it. I've read that the sushi thing is more an issue of food poisoning (like any other raw food) or Mercury (I know what fish to avoid). Everything else they said was "pregnancy hype"
  • I actually broke down and went for sushi the other night. Ate mostly cooked sushi or sushi I could take the raw fish off the top of. Lots of places have them with cooked lobster, shrimp or crab. Also, unagi is bbq eel, so fully cooked. As long as it's a clean, nice place I say everything in moderation.

I've been more concerned about eating from the food trucks that park at work during lunch, honestly. They're so convenient when I don't want to drive or forget my lunch, but I'm not as convinced of their cleanliness.

  • I've said eff it a few times too and just went with what I was craving. I still have yet to confirm if Buffalo Wild Wings has pasteurized blue cheese in their blue cheese dip for their wings, and am usually okay sticking with ranch, but the other week I just wanted that creamy goodness that pairs so nicely with my favorite sauces so I GOT IT! It was soooo delicious!!
  • I was craving sushi so badly last week, so I pre-shopped the menu before we got to the restaurant. I found a couple rolls that were fully cooked- so not the same, but it satisfied my craving! I miss sashimi, brie, and lattes so much!
  • ....and ceviche. I miss ceviche!
  • @bprowess, that's frustrating isn't it?! I haven't necessarily been craving things I shouldn't eat, but I have been craving eating out. We're trying to watch our spending so I try not to order food but it's really all I want to do. I don't want to eat anything we have at home but I'll take anything from a restaurant!
  • My Dr. said just don't be stupid when it comes to food and eat what I want for the most part. If I ate sushi somewhere before then go back to the same place. Lunchmeat, eat away. Pretty much anything you can buy at a grocery store is safe. He said 99% of what you read online is BS. I'm sorry, but I tend to agree. I've had sushi twice, it was amazing.

You can pretty much be 100 percent sure a chain restaurant in the USA is not using unpasteurized dairy. Go for it.

This. Honestly, I know the local dairy that produces organic unpasturized milk and I even feel comfortable having that! I think people get way outta hand with no eating anything out of fear.
I think it's more important to actually eat something while pregnant than to worry constantly about what you might be eating and to not eat at all. But to each their own!
All I know is I'm lucky to be able to stomach anything, so if it sounds good I'll eat it!
  • The only reason to avoid foods while pregnant is because of the risk of foodborne pathogens that can cross to the fetus. So I agree with being reasonable and using your judgement. The list of foods that are more susceptible to foodborne pathogens is ridiculous. I've never gotten ill from runny eggs, rare beef, soft cheeses (most of what the stores sell is pasteurized anyway), lunch meats, or soft serve ice cream... All things I've seen people told to avoid.
  • Oh my gravy I want sushi so bad. My husband would murder me. He's way over protective, he's crazy...we are all craxy
  • Sushi, wine, smoked salmon with unpasteurized goat cheese.... I could eat all of those, right now. Yum.
  • Thanks ladies... I wound up just eating a few bits of a chicken quesadilla, but I will certainly be getting smoked salmon tonight!  This not eating is for the birds.  :)

@missbianca84 Brie is okay as long as it uses pasteurized milk, which if you're in the US is true for most. Check the label, it might be completely safe and something you don't have to miss!

    Edit: spelling
  • I agree with @Lyette1206.  I have been eating a lot of stuff you aren't "supposed" to eat. I had the most amazing spicy tuna roll of my life and ordered a second one too. I didn't die (and acting on faith that baby didn't get anything). It was my understanding that small amounts of fish were fine, even sushi (from a very recent study). Many of these food born illnesses are every where. Apples, spinach, peanuts. All stuff that is really good for you and it is sort of a crap shoot in terms of safety. I have been avoiding soft cheeses and deli meats, but do have unpasteurized products. Can I really have brie?

My friend's thing was wine. She would have one glass with dinner every once in a while. Her baby is fine.
