Any Nurse Moms

Ok I am a new mother about 6 weeks and 5 days to be exact. I work in Cardiology Department. How the hell are yall surviving with all the smells? I mean right after lunch is the worse. Everyday it seems as though the ms is all day while at work and then when I come home the ms goes down. I just hate calling off and don't want to get in trouble.

Re: Any Nurse Moms

  • I work in the MICU (medical) lol thank god smells are not my issues. I think I had a high tolerance before or something haha. I smelled some nasty fish someone was eating, but the other awful smells haven't bothered me aka GIB. I'm nauseous and it hasn't exacerbated it or anything. I've thrown up a few times at work, but it's been after food.

  • I work in Adult Med Surg (float pool) and I have had to tell the techs that I "just couldn't do it I'm gonna barf" on a couple occasions. Luckily I have a good relationship with most of them :) I also have to chew gum or suck on jolly ranchers or lifesavers ALL DAY just to keep from throwing up. If a smell is bad and I just can't get out if it I hold my breath and take short mouth breaths until I can leave the room. It's not fun!! But I'm 10 weeks now and it's getting much better.
  • I'm a school nurse in a high school and luckily things generally aren't that bad.... but I have one student who gets cathed everyday. The other day there was a serious code brown and I almost lost my shit right then and there.

I seriously don't know how y'all are surviving in the hospital!!!! :-&

Vix or essentail oils under your nose may help. I use quease ease and it seems to help me. I'm also a nurse in a small critical access hospital.

I don't work in the hospital anymore, so smells at work are not an issue for my pregnancy...buuutttt I was washing a larger vegetative patient 4 years ago on night shift with one of my nurse friends while she was pregnant and the patient passed gas in her direction while we had them on their side and she literally projectile vomited over the patient onto the floor next to the bed.

It was the funniest/most disturbing thing I've ever seen. Correction--that I saw a nurse do. The patients definitely did some more disturbing things at times.
  • I'm an RN and work in surgical intensive care and smells haven't really gotten to me much actually. I think I had a high tolerance to begin with. Lol. Not only that, I've had some serious sinusitis since becoming pregnant which I've heard is quite common as well. I'll be 10 weeks tomorrow. It makes things difficult though because I can't breath well out of my nose currently so I feel short of breath and winded allllll the time. :(

  • I'm an ld RN and am currently 9w2d. It's been pretty bad lol Im prn and I've had to take some extra days off the schedule due to the nausea. Plus no one at work knows I'm pregnant yet
  • Thank ladies. I'm going to buy jolly ranchers. Yes I almost puked on a patient while giving a simple EKG. Like dang I have a reputation to maintain. The struggle is real at 6 weeks.
  • I have been taking days off, but I don't want to get in trouble. Times like this I wish I was per diem instead if full time. Hopefully jolly ranchers and those sea bands work. It's like I almost dread going to work because of the smells. I'm praying this passes as I would HATE to be on bed rest.
  • I'm a postpartum nurse. Luckily the smells at work haven't been too bad for me yet. I am 9 weeks so hopefully it is going to start getting better soon. I keep tons of sour candy on hand and snack on saltines all night. I only work 1-2 nights a week which helps too. The worst for me right now is the exhaustion. It is so hard to get through my overnights.

  • I am an rpn and work in long term care. Breakfast is the worse the smell of eggs and bending down to get my narcotics out of the bottom drawer I wanna hurl! My staff is amazing and understand.
  • I work in an ER and lets just say I've been mouth breathing for the past month! Also try wearing a mask with a big glob of toothpaste in it...it seriously helps a lot!
  • I take the deodorant rollers and roll it in the inside on my mask :) Or peppermint gum!
  • My first pregnancy, I was in nursing school and working as a CNA in a SNF. I hardly had any m/s, but there was one specific patient whose urine ALWAYS made me ill. It was so bad, I could not help her in the restroom at all because I just threw up every time.
  • I'm struggling big time. I'm not hiding my pregnancy at work but I'm not shouting it either. I work on a Med/Surg unit on the surgical side with some medical. The smells while they get to me aren't the big issue. It's the gag reflex they are triggering which is super sensitive right now. I switch to nights this week and I'm terrified since they usually have less techs than days do.
