This back pain is killing me. Any ideas?

Hey ladies. I was just wondering if someone has good advice.
I am really struggling with my back pain. It's been going on for nearly 4 weeks, I've seen a Physio (been doing the exercises she gave me), seen a Chiro now for 2 weeks (not sure if it's doing anything).
Strong pain in the middle of the back, also another pain  on the front, where my diaphragm is.
The longer I sit, the worse it gets, and I am struggling EVERY DAY to stay at work for 8 hours, as I have a desk job.

I'm doing my exercises, I walk 4 to 5 times a week, and i spend some time every day floating in the pool (my favorite thing to do right now, as I am in the least pain once I am in the pool. I need to turn into a fish...)

My bra size has changed two band sizes (not cup, of course... grrr) and I would guess that's what's causing the pain?!?! That's a pretty big change.

I need to get this sorted. I might even go see a normal doc, not sure though how useful it is.

Any of you experience something similar? What can I do? What helped you?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. This is driving me crazy and I have to somehow manage to sit on a plane in a 5 weeks, for about 26 hours.... The thought of that makes me teary!!! I need to get this fixed!!!

  • I have the same problem don't know what to do

  • I had some serious pain in the center of my back as well as through my shoulder blades. For a while the only thing that helped was laying flat on my back but it would come back soon after I stood or sat up. Once I got several maternity bras the pain started to go away. The straps across my back are much wider than my old ones and much more supportive in the front, back and shoulders.

I got two maternity bras but unfortunately it doesn't help:-( they are way more comfortable though so it was no waste of money.

  • Are you a tummy sleeper? I love sleeping on my stomach, but I do wake up with some back pain. For me it's probably causing my back to arch through the night. I'm not sure if the way you sleep is affecting things, but just a thought.
  • The snoogle has helped me so much. If. Get soreness in a day, a night with the snoogle and I wake up feeling perfect.

  • I second the suggestion of some sort of body pillow for back and shoulder pain. I had the pain around my diaphragm last pregnancy; it was caused by ab muscles stretching and organs starting to get shifted around. It eventually went away on its own.
  • Does your chiro specialize in women and pregnancy? That makes a huge difference. My chiro saved me from debilitating back pain last pregnancy, but she specializes in pregnancy. I didn't ever get a normal pop-your-back adjustment, it was an involved process. What exercises are you doing? What's your posture like sitting in your chair? How often do you get up out of your chair to stretch and move?
  • Oh, also, if you sit a lot during the day, try sitting on an exercise ball instead of a chair.
  • Pre-pregnancy, I started working from home last year. I've never had back pain until after 2 months of working from home, and it was miserable. I started making little changes to see what would help, and one of the biggest helps was splurging on an office chair similar to what I had at my last office job.

It may be worth it to buy your own and bring it into work. Another thing that is great for people with office jobs and back pain are standing desks. I don't know how big your office is, but at my last job, we could put in a request for a standing desk.

Another thing I did was adding stretches good for your back into my daily routine. It didn't help overnight, but after a month with my new chair, daily stretches, and getting back into my workouts, my back pain improved significantly.
  • My husband gives me back massages. It makes a workd of difference.
  • I'm having upper and middle back pain, not lower back pain and its excruciating! The longer I sit, the worse it gets. Riding in a vehicle is like torture! It's even hard to breathe at times. Not sure if I slept wrong last night (tried to prop myself up with a pillow)... I'm praying it goes away fast and isn't something that wants to stick around. :-S
  • I agree with @araecasey - having a chiro that specializes in pregnant women is super helpful!

This website is a good way to find doctors that specialize in pregnant women!
  • Have you tried sleeping with a maternity pillow or alternatively a firm pillow between your knees and one behind your back for support. I second the gym ball it helps take the pressure off your back at work. Acupuncture can also be very helpful in relieving pain so you could maybe see someone for that? Also Preggy Pilates is excellent during second trimester helps with back pain and strengthening the core. I've also been dealing with severe back issues so I feel your pain. I hope this helps.
  • Hi Ladies

thanks for all your supplies, you are great!!!
I will try a pregnancy pillow for sleeping, I think!
My chiro does treat a lot of pregnant women, but I am not sure... I just don't feel like it is helping. He keeps telling me it takes time and so on... Maybe I have a patience issue ..
Not sure if I should listen to my gut or  just be more patient.

I had a bit of a scare yesterday (see my placenta previa post)... So now I am even more nervous about what to do about it, or if my back pain is related or part of a symptom of placenta previa. I have another appointment on Monday, so I will see what they say about that..

My work is actually happy to get me a standing desk, where I could vary from seated to standing positions, so I think I should take them up on that offer...

I will update on Monday on what they told me about my back issues!!

Thank you all very much for your suggestions! So glad I'm on this forum!

    xx

Update: floating in the pool helped a lot! And I think being active... Walking on the beach made a difference too. My back is feeling so much better... But my husband suggested; that it could be stress. When I sat at my desk this morning (after our weekend away) and I realized how far behind I was... The back pain started almost instantly! So I think hubby was right... Stress!

Also: bought stress relief lotion from Bath and Body Works (peppermint and eucalyptus)... Rubbed it on my back and feet before bed! Awesome!
  • Will try to find a lotion like that.
I am also floating in the pool every single day, I think this is my lifesaver!!!
I have to take it easy now exercise wise (placenta previa for now..) but I can still walk. If i don't move, it just gets unbearable.

I will stick to going to the Chiropractor and give it a chance... I have a very long flight ahead of me in 5 weeks and I need to get better by then, otherwise I am in for a bad trip!
