breastfeeding

Dear Parents,
My son is 3 weeks old, he was born 4.3kg and is now 5.1 kg. I have been ebf him. It has been pretty tough. Over the last 5 days, each feeding session lasts around 2 hours and he is fussy and irritabld during it despite that i have some.overflow in one one of the breasts, and regular flow in thd other. He seems hungry between feeding. And seems irritable all the time. I decided to express milk and give it to him, to presrve my sanity. He still seems hungry right after he finishes the bottle of 5oz and seems to be seeking for more and wakes up again in 3 hours (before i have enough milk to pump) hungry again.is this hunger? Is this normal? I dont want my child to be unhappy, i dont know what wrong am I doing :(

Re: breastfeeding

  • They have a growth spurt at 3 weeks, it sounds like this is what you are describing! Fussy, marathon nursing, then comfort nursing (you don't have anything else to do, right!?), then insatiable fussiness again. Fun times. I called my lactation consultant with the exact same concerns (am I starving her? Is she getting enough?) and she said just keep doing what you're doing, it's a growth spurt! It lasted about 3-4 days I think.

I have over supply, too. Have you tried feeding off of the same breast several feedings in a row to make sure he gets the more satisfying hindmilk?

Have you reached out to a local La Leche group? They've really helped me. They even have meetings and play dates for fellowship and support.

He may just want to comfort suck, my girl goes through phases of that. I just get a couple of things to drinks, some snacks, my phone charger and settle in. Oh, and nipple cream! I don't know how...but it works!
  • Most babies hit a growth spurt at 3 weeks. It will pass in a few days. Then before you know it you will be at the 6 week grow spurt. Hang in there
  • Thank you for your replies, there is no lactation consultant nearby, i talked to someone by phone though.
I tried to feed one breast per feed, and trier cabbage compresses which helped. Now things are better he manges to empty tge breast.
I still can not multitask while breastfeeding, :p and doing it for two long hours have been super hard.
  • I've just started pumping one side while my daughter nurses the other. She's 2 months old and also takes a long time to nurse. With a hands free bra, I just lift up the side she is nursing from. Just a thought to help lessen the time spent sitting & nursing
  • When baby gets a little bigger and has better head control and can latch better without being cradled you will be multitasking. My LO is 11 weeks tomorrow and I can feed him on the left and use my right arm to go on computer, talk on phone, put make up on once when I was trying to get ready, get a cup of water, etc. I'm use to always doing stuff and working a lot so sitting in front of the TV for hours was actually the hardest part for me about breastfeeding.
