Formula feeding

After struggling with breastfeeding, we switched to formula. For the first couple of weeks we were using ready to feed but have now purchased several cans of powder. Upon reading several different ways how to prepare formula, I asked our Doctor yesterday who said to just use straight tap water. No need to boil and cool or anything like that. She said that method is outdated and unnecessary. This seems so strange to me; has anyone else's Doctor told them straight tap water without boiling is ok?

Re: Formula feeding

  • My doctor has said the same thing they told me that city tap water is fine

  • Same here. She did say that when you travel to use bottled water because the water can upset their stomach from different places
  • I haven't asked my doctor this but I don't even drink our tap water, so I buy the gallon of purified/distilled water.
  • Yeah I'm thinking if they don't want you to boil it just use what you would normally drink; if you don't drink your tap water then I wouldn't use for formula.
  • They told me to boil the tap water. I plan in using distilled water once LO is a bit older
  • Thanks everyone. I do think it may depend on where you live and how purified your water supply is/what it contains. The doctor said I could use a Brita pitcher if it makes me feel better, although it's not necessary. I made the doc repeat herself 3 times because I thought I wasn't hearing her correctly! I researched a little more today and found the same recommendation on some pediatrics websites...this is the first I heard not to boil.
  • My SIL just used the water from the refrigerator filter straight into the bottle. We aren't using any formula right now but if we need to I will either use that or just tap water (our tap water is really good quality so that factors in)
  • I use straight tap water. LO has had no issues. Our city water is really good and i drink it myself. I do pack a bottled water in the diaper bag for traveling and trips oit. But thats more for convenience. I have found that at night using water a lottle warm helps her drift off better. She seems to like cooler formula in the am and warmer in the evening.
  • We use the Gerber purified water its only 88 cents a gallon here. We just give it to her at room temperature because heating it up makes her spit it up.
  • I've been using filtered water from the fridge but our pedi said tap water was fine.
  • We have a fancy pants RO filter at our kitchen sink and we use that water. I asked my sister what she used and she said they used the filtered water from the fridge. Our baby and her babies don't seem to have any problem with the filtered tap water :) We also just make up the bottles with room temperature water. I only warm up breast milk or formula bottles that have been in the fridge and I don't aim for really warm as much as bringing them to room temperature.
  • We buy gallons of bottled water. I just don't feel comfortable giving my newborn water that has floride in it.
  • We use tap. If you're concerned, check with your city about the quality of tap water. But standards are higher than they used to be for city tap.
